Son and I are just getting into trolling for walleyes. We have Offshore OR-12 planer boards and was wondering if the releases on them will work for power pro 10# line? Should I upgrade to a different release or just wrap the line around once and thru the release again? Any advice is welcome to us

I don't like super braids for trolling, but I have been is some boats that do. The best advice I can give for super line is to go to the snapper releases. You can tighten these down alot. But you may still have slipping issues after a while. Not sure if they have replaceable pads or not. Jerry can advise you on that.
I've seen guys use the OR-16 release, but most have to wrap the line. The good thing is the OR-16's have the tit inside, so the line stays in the release.

Shep, the linecounter reels I purchased from a person are already spooled with the power pro. Should I look at using mono line instead of the super braid? When we trolled last year with my brother-in-law we connected with alot of northern while trolling. Any advice on possibly using a leader so we don't loose so many lures?

Try the snapper releases regardless of mono or braid. They are all I use on my boards. They stay attached much better in big waves. I won't run my boards without them.

There are replacement pads for every Offshore Tackle planer board release made. However, I have gone to the snapper release on the front of my boards and in 3 years I have yet to change out a pad. They can easily be tightened to the user's needs. You can check out all of Offshore Tackle's inventory at www.offshoretackle.com.

I only use superbraids (Fireline, Power Pro, etc) when trolling cranks on the rivers. To me, it depends on what your application will be: open water cranks, spinners, trolling in lakes or rivers, etc. I use 10 lb XT and 12 lb. Sensation for just about all trolling applications except leadcore/crank trolling in rivers. In the many years of trolling with boards I've broke off one fish. And that fish broke off because it got down in the zebra mussels out on a reef.

I used the new Crystal Fireline last fall during the FLW Championship at Lake Oahe and it performs well. I used my boards with the snapper relase in the front and had zero failures of the release.

I will be fishing lakes and mostly the Mississippi River. I will check into the snapper releases. Thanx guys, your help is very appreciated. I will try the power pro 10/2 and see if I like it. Still waiting for my PT bible to arrive to help with the dive curves. We have alot of Rapala SR-5 and Taildancers, Have a few reef runners (deep and little ripper), Salmo Hornets. Slow buying crankbaits here and there.

Thanks for clearing that up jerry. I don't have any of the snapper releases, so I wasn't sure if the pads are replaceable or not. I have a buddy that uses them for trolling muskies with super braid, and he has some that have wear spots and will slip. The nice thing is you have a bigger pad to move the line to a fresh area.

I agree with superbraid for trolling in the rivers. And I know lots of guys that use superbraid all the time. I think most of those use 30 lb, for the same diameter as 10 lb XT.

30# sounds kinda much. If I was to respool with superbraid I was thinking more in the 20# or 15#. Jerry, how do you think the 10# power pro will work for in the Miss R. ?

It should work fine. I used Fireline in 10/4 last spring and it worked well for me. Good luck.

You may still have some problem with slipping with the OR-18 (snapper) releases on the front (tow) arm. The 8/30 is quite a bit bigger in diameter and follows the PT dive charts fairly well, if you care to switch. Another mod I use with my boards (in addition to the OR-18 on the tow arm) is to put a Church clip on the back release. By using an OR-18 on the front you are assured that the board won't slip off the line (it has a pin when closed "forward") and the Church is basically a non-slip release that is easily removed when playing a fish.

I have a total of 8 Off Shore boards and at 1 time they all had the snapper releases on them but in the cold weather my wife had a hard time opening them,so with advice of a friend I put on a set of Church's releases and now all but two have the Church releases on them.I also troll with both mono and Power Pro and can't remember the last time I had a board come off because of a release. If you get the Churchs make sure you get the ones that can be adjusted with the screw.Paul

Thanx to everyone who has posted. There is alot of great advice and will have to decide which way to go. I think I will order some OR-18 snaps and try it on the power pro 10/2 line.. Now we just need 2 left offshore planer boards, already have 2 right side. Anybody have a couple lefts to sell?

I have posted this before, but it gets lost in the thread list over the years.
If you want to use braided line, and the trolling book, you have to adjust the line out, because the braids with smaller diamater will go deeper than mono. The formula that matches the mono feet back is---> 2/3 of the amount mono line required. Example is 100 feet back for 10lb. mono, will be 66 feet back for 10lb. braid, with the smaller diamater. Hope this helps.

To combat Zebra Mussels or Pike we use about a 4' leader of Fireline from the Mono tied with a small barrel swivel. I sometimes have to change it every time out but it only takes a couple of minutes in the garage and results in fewer lost baits. We use only Super Silver Thread in 12#. It's about the same diameter of Trilene 10# on which the calculations in the Trolling Bible are based. If you want to use a super braid, follow Hafe's advice. Good Luck.

Been using 20# fireline and OR-18 snapper releases. the pads were wore in one season, now just double wrap the release, Or-16 on the back clip. Have had very few fish "pop" a board.

20# fireline matches up with the "bible" extremely well.
