The pros and co anglers sat in a soaking downpour this morning during a half hour plus fog delay. When the fog lifted, the rain continued until about 8:30. it's still 'misty' out there.

Weather today looks like a 90% chance of rain with the winds going over from South to North West 10 to 15 with a high temp of 68*. The cloud cover should reserve the bite, so it may be a big 'Eye day on the Bays today.

Keith Kavajecz talked with us today about what that group is doing to catch their fish, an interesting tactic. The rest of the field is pulling cranks or spinners for the most part, watch the video below!

NWT coverage is brought to you by Off Shore tackle, Lund Boats and Mercury Outboards.

Mercury Pro Keith Kavajecz smoked 'em again today weighing 25.70 on a tough bite to total 53.50 and take the win. Business partner and best friend Gary Parsons took second with 35.10 today to total 48.02. The pair were pitching Shiver Minnows after working areas either known for holding fish or spotting the fish on the sonar and casting back to them. Keith told us in a post event interview he caught some of the fish literally in the wake and propwash from the Merc Verado.

The win was worth over $78,000.00 in cash and prizes.

Third went to local pro Derek Parker. In fourth was Ryan Dempsey, and Don Loch, overdue for a top 5 finish, took home fifth place.

NWT Leaderboard

The next NWT is in a few weeks out of Osh Kosh, WI. NWT coverage is brought to you by Lund Boats, mercury Outboards, and Off Shore Tackle.

Are you talking about these Shiver Minnows? If so, I'm a tad perplexed.

I have been informed that the technique they were using is called "Bombing". Using a 360 deg. sonar, when they spot a Fish they know the exact distance from the boat and its position relative to the boat. They then make a quick cast to the fish and allow the lure to sink to the depth the fish is located. A quick twitch or two and usually the fish will or won't hit. That's the reason for the fast falling ice fishing baits working so well.

So this technique begins with purchasing a $3000 tool to get started. Then $6.00 and a spinning rod to complete. I might need to be put this technique and the sonar on the Bucket list for a while. But bow to the pro's both lucky and smart enough to figure this technique out.

Gary was working areas more meticulously, and Keith was looking over a hump, marking fish, and stopping, throwing the Verado into reverse, and casting to the fish. Sometimes he caught the fish directly under the propwash and boat wake. He was averaging 15 mph looking for the fish.

The were working the lure with a side to side sort of cadence, and the straight drop that particular lure has coupled with the darting action out to the sides was credited for the 'reaction' strikes they felt they were getting.

Keith talks about this in the video below.

With the new side imaging and 360, you'll see more more variations of this. Most people are underutilizing the technology. Only surprise is the 15 mph. My experience is that it works better at 5mph and less. As I guessed before rip jigging works along with rattle traps and jigging raps. Modifications come into play when the reaction bait is not working and you have to seduce a fish that you know is there. The bass guys have been doing this on the circuit for awhile now. A little surprised they didn't mention jigging raps but knowing where they were and knowing that a favorite bait shop up there sells the shivers, I shouldn't be surprised.

They actually did mention jigging raps in the earlier onstage conversation. They tried them and caught a couple fish, but the Shiverminnow out fished the Rap by a margin for the team. Gary actually came up with the idea, and both he and Keith expressed they felt the reason the Shiverminnow excelled in this situation was the less 'circular' motion when ripping and dropping. The Shiverminnow has more of a side to action and a straighter drop. They were catching the fish on the drop and felt that the straighter drop allowed the walleyes to hit the lure easier. They said the Jigging Rap and Shiverminnow are completely different baits.

Gary also mentioned looking online for the baits, but didn't need to purchase any online because of the shop up there.

Keith and Gary, you two rock! I've been to both of your seminars, multiple times, from the beginning, and caught 10x the walleyes from the information both you two provided. Also, I thank you for all the trend setting tactics both of you passed on to me. For this I will always be grateful. Congratulations on an awesome 1st and 2nd place and good luck on your future tournaments.

The awesome part is their williness to share all. I have to admit that I would be inclined to keep the info secret at least till the end of the season. It would be one thing if a sponsored lure achieved the win. They will be making it lucrative for moonshine to say the least. My hats off to them for trying to take the sport to another level. Reall classy! My take away from this, You never should stop learning and experimenting.

What Sunshine said. Interacting, as well as seeing and fishing against these two a few times right from their own humble beginnings years ago are telling. Both Gary and Keith have stayed reasonably approachable when other Pro's became Howard Hughes like over time or once some notoriety was achieved. In a game where telling or sharing your newly discovered fish catching secrets could cost you some living expenses, the whole Pro thing and staying there with dignity and respect is a tough game.
