Location: Rhinelander | The morning was as chilly as yesterday and the winds are still down, so look for some more impressive weights to cross the scales this afternoon. Techniques in play are rip jigging, jigging, and lead core with Flicker Shads. The weigh in starts at 4 PM this afternoon. WalleyeFIRST coverage of the MWC is brought to you by Lund Boats and Mercury Outboards! Location: Rhinelander | Jim Preissner and Mike Olson took the lead weighing in 30.15 for a total of 57.032. During a morning interview with WalleyeFIRST, Jim said they are fishing Berkley Flicker Shads for most of the action, but we did see a couple jigging lures in the rig. Moving up to second were Travor Diegel and Paul Steffen with 54.13. Third are Freidig and Devier with 54.05. Moving up to fourth are Sprengel and Navis with 53.03, and rounding out the top five are day 1 leaders Morris and Bruer with 49.04. It looks like this thing may be a shootout tomorrow. Here's the kicker...the wind is forecast to blow like the very Devil this area is named after; starting out at sustained winds at 12 out of the S at 8 AM, and going up to 21 by weigh in time. That might change a thing or two for some of the field. Take off is 8 AM tomorrow morning out of Grahams Island State Park. Not to disrupt the flow of great monster walleye pictures and the reporting for this championship, but I could not help but notice the irony on two things I read in this post. One was Sunshine noting that the fish coming to the scales are (IHV) bigger then expected. And two, the techniques used to catch them. I fished with some friends on the Saginaw River yesterday and we caught what I can only describe as some bigger then usual walleyes for this time of year. And we caught them using the exact same things, pumping lead core with #5 firetiger flickers and later jigging. I attribute the bigger walleye showing up in the river earlier this fall to the cooler then usual summer we've had this year. My guess is, that many of the bigger walleye did not migrate out of the inner Bay this summer because of the usual heat and transversely cooler temps have forced a lot of the bait fish into the river earlier. Not sure how that correlates with the MWC action and results, but it's interesting to note.
