Shimota Wins FLW Walleye League Finals
MOLINE, Ill. (Sept. 15, 2007) - Boater Bill Shimota of Lonsdale, Minn., caught 11 saugers and one walleye weighing 22 pounds, 7 ounces during three days of competition in the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye League Finals on the Mississippi River in Moline to secure a $47,500 victory Saturday by 2 pounds, 3 ounces over his closest competitor. Shimota earned a Ranger 621 powered by an Evinrude or Yamaha outboard.

Following the same pattern he fished on days one and two, Shimota spent most of his time fishing over "washboard" bottom - sandy humps - in about 8-14 feet of water in an outside bend of the river. Hand-lining with crank baits proved to be an effective strategy for keeping his lures near the bottom and drawing reaction strikes.

Shimota said day three provided a welcome break from the congestion with which he contended a day earlier. After posting his day-one lead, he found several competitors fishing near him on the second day. "My spot got pretty crowded on day two, but today I had plenty of room and that allowed me to work my spot better. I was able to zig zag across the area and that created a better presentation than going in a straight line."

Anglers were allowed to enter walleyes and saugers in any combination up to five fish. Legal walleyes must measure 15-20 inches and anglers can keep two over 27 inches. Saugers have only a 15-inch minimum. With saugers presenting a more active bite, along with the ability to keep more of what he caught, Shimota decided to forego walleyes.

"On day one, I was catching a lot of small walleyes, but I ran into some larger saugers, so that kind of told me what to target," he said. "I caught some walleye along the way, too, but I had more weight with the saugers."

On Thursday, Shimota caught four saugers and one walleye weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces. He added another 3 saugers weighing 5 pounds, 4 ounces to his total Friday, then he capped off his win Saturday with another 4 saugers weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces.

Rounding out the top five boaters are Don Marx of Rockford, Minn. (12 fish, 20 pounds, 4 ounces, $5,000); Dan Krukow of Rochester, Minn. (10 fish, 17 pounds, 4 ounces, $4,500); Dusty Minke of New Brighton, Minn. (6 fish, 13 pounds, 4 ounces, $2,500); and Jonathan Shoemaker of Elyria, Ohio (7 fish, 13 pounds, 1 ounce, $2,000).

Mike Eiden of New Haven, Ind. won the Co-angler Division with a three-day total of 11 sauger and one walleye weighing 22 pounds, 4 ounces. His effort earned him a $27,000 G3 V185F powered by Yamaha.

On Thursday, Eiden caught four saugers and one walleye weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces while fishing with Shimota. He added another three saugers weighing 5 pounds, 1 ounce to his total Friday while fishing with Marx, then he capped off his win Saturday with another four saugers weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces while fishing with Shimota.

After topping the co-angler division on day one and then defending his lead on day two, Eiden found himself returning to Shimota's boat with a heightened sense of optimism going into the final round. "I was happy to be paired with (Shimota) again. We already had good energy between us from day one.

When we got out there on our first spot and we popped the first big fish, it was bigger than anything else (Shimota) had caught all week. It just felt right, like we might have a chance here today."

Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Eldon Olson of Mason City, Iowa (10 fish, 17 pounds, 15 ounces, $2,500); Steve Keller of Beloit, Wis. (9 fish, 16 pounds, 1 ounce, $1,750); Jamie Revermann of St. Joseph, Minn. (6 fish, 11 pounds, 14 ounces, $1,000); and Todd Wiedmann of Audubon, Minn. (6 fish, 11 pounds, 9 ounces, $750).

A total of 18 walleyes weighing 34 pounds, 3 ounces were caught Saturday by the 10 teams who made the final-round cut. Only Marx and Olson caught a five-fish limit.

Boaters and co-anglers who finished in the top 35 in final points standings after three qualifying events in each FLW Walleye League division advanced to this no-entry-fee tournament.

Boaters and co-anglers are randomly paired each day of the event and fish for a combined boat weight that carries over from day to day. Boaters compete against other boaters, and co-anglers compete against other co-anglers. The winners are determined by the heaviest three-day accumulated weight, with only the top 10 boaters and top 10 co-anglers fishing on day three.

Shimota, Eiden lead FLW Walleye League Finals at Moline
MOLINE, Ill. (Sept. 13, 2007) - Boater Bill Shimota of Lonsdale, Minn., and his co-angler partner, Mike Eiden of New Haven, Ind., caught one walleye and four saugers weighing 9 pounds, 4 ounces Thursday to secure an opening day lead of 1 pound, 6 ounces over their closest competitors in the Wal-Mart FLW Walleye League Finals on the Mississippi River in Moline. A field of 105 boaters representing the league's Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin divisions is competing for a $47,500 Ranger 621 powered by either an Evinrude or Yamaha outboard, while 105 co-anglers are competing for a $27,000 G3 V185F powered by Yamaha.

"I thought I had a pretty good chance of catching five fish today, but I thought they'd be closer to 15 or 16 inches - just barely legal," Shimota said. (Legal walleyes must be 15-20 inches and anglers can keep two over 27 inches. Sauger have only a 15-inch minimum). "We ran into some bigger saugers and I had one over 20 inches and a couple of 17's. I would have been happy with just a few of those fish today."

Shimota and Eiden picked up most of their fish over sandy humps in an outside river bend close to a side channel. The leaders trolled artificial lures designed to imitate gizzard shad - the indigenous forage. With an abundance of baitfish providing ample food sources, Shimota determined that trolling would trigger reaction strikes among disinterested fish.

Eiden credited Shimota's practice effort for their day one success. "Bill did his homework. He got out there, tried some different things and got a game plan together. He was able to find fish that would bite and he stuck to his plan."

In his first year of Walleye League competition, Shimota won the last qualifying event in the league's Minnesota Division and finished second in the division's points race.

Rounding out the top five are boater Jonathan Shoemaker of Elyria, Ohio, and co-angler Eldon Olson of Mason City, Iowa (4 walleyes, 7 pounds, 14 ounces); boater Eric Olson of Red Wing, Minn., and co-angler Jamie Revermann of St. Joseph, Minn. (4 walleyes, 7 pounds, 12 ounces); boater Chad Wertepny of Green Bay, Wis., and co-angler Jamie Nieland of Albany, Minn. (5 walleyes, 7 pounds, 8 ounces); and boater Dan Krukow of Rochester, Minn., and co-angler Aaron Mestad of Deerwood, Minn. (5 walleyes, 7 pounds, 2 ounces).

A total of 79 walleyes weighing 137 pounds, 5 ounces were caught Thursday, including a trio of five-fish limits.

MOLINE, Ill. (Aug. 21, 2007) - The Wal-Mart FLW Walleye League will stage its 2007 League Finals on the waters of the Mighty Mississippi in Moline, Ill., Sept. 13-15.

The nationally televised tournament will feature the best weekend walleye anglers from three divisions - Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin - competing for top awards of a $47,500 Ranger 621 boat powered by either an Evinrude or Yamaha outboard in the Boater Division and a $27,000 G3 V185F powered by Yamaha in the Co-angler Division.

Anglers will take off from Sunset Park at 7 each morning. Thursday and Friday's weigh-ins will also be held at the park, which is located at Route 92 and 31st St. in Rock Island, Ill., beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday's weigh-in moves to the Wal-Mart store located at 3930 44th Ave. in Moline beginning at 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend the free takeoff and weigh-in festivities.

"Wal-Mart FLW Walleye League anglers represent the next generation of fishing superstars," said FLW Outdoors Director of Walleye Operations Sonny Reynolds. "Qualifying for the Finals is extremely difficult. The anglers competing in Moline represent some of the best in the sport, and many are ready to step up to the FLW Walleye Tour."

Anglers qualified for the FLW Walleye League Finals by finishing in the top 35 in their respective divisions through three one-day tournaments. Every angler who received weight credit earned points, with 100 points awarded to the winner, 99 for second, 98 for third, and so on in each qualifier. These points determined angler standings.

"This is our third major walleye event that we have held in the Quad Cities, and the hospitality is second to none," Reynolds said. "Our previous events were very successful, and we expect this one to be just as exciting. Fishing should be good and with four pools of the river available to the anglers, there will be several different presentations that will be effective. Depending on the area that they are fishing, you will find anglers using every technique from jigging to handlining."
