Trying to decide whether to go with the 175 or the 200 Suzuki on the new 1890. I know that it is always said that you should try to max out the power but with there being a $2500 dollar difference in price, is it something that I need to do. Is anybody running an 1890 with a 175 Suzuki on it. I know there are a lot of you guys that are running 200 opti's but what about a 200 Suzuki. What is the difference in hole-shot and top end. Thanks for the help guyz!!!

There are a few 200 Suzis out there on 1890's, Norm Wild had one on his 1890 at the get together this past weekend. The 200 will push you mid to upper 50's fully loaded. I have not seen one with 175, but there are a few out there with 150 opti's, and they run very well. Holeshot will be no different, but you will lose top end, guessing that will probably be a 52 MPH boat with a 175.

Fisherman Zach,

A would think a 175 Suzi will do just fine on that rig. I know Norm was pushing close to 60mph with a 200, I would bet a 175 on that rig will keep you in the low to mid 50mph range. More than enough speed. Just won't have the acceleration, nor the fuel economy a Opti gives. Just go with what you perfer and can afford.

Zach,
I know what the 200 does on an 1890. It jumps out of the water and runs mid 50's regularly with a full load. I have no experience on the 175 but suspect that the actual difference would be very minimal.

I do know this, the 175 is at the peak output of its engine block, the 200 is on the bottom output of that block. This tells me the 200 is stressing the block a bit less than the 175 is. That may or may not be a factor for you if you plan on keeping the motor for a long time.

Actually if you aren't looking to keep it for many, many years you might want to consider the 200 for resaleability. People really seem to prefer the higher HP when buying boats.

Performance will no doubt be a bit less but not enough to negatively influence this hull. You will be running the motor a bit harder with a 175 resulting in less efficiency (not enough to justify $2500) and possible maintenance issues in the distant future ( I say possible because I have yet to hear of many maintenance issues with Suzis). Bottom line, it comes down to your personal preference and budget allowances. If the extra speed and resale issues don't bother you, save yourself $2500!

If you have any further questions feel free to zip me an email or give me a call.

Not sure stressing the block is an issue. The bore and stroke of the 150 and 175 are the same. The basic difference in those two is the programming of the ECM. I don't see any term issues down the road with one(175) vs. the other(200).

The biggest differnce I see is the weight. 485 vs 580 for the 200. That's 100 pounds. I think the 175 would perform pretty good on this boat with 100 pounds less weight on the back.

That said, it's still isn't going to have the overall performance of the Opti, in either size. It will be quieter, though, if that is important.

I still haven't decided if I am going to sell my current 1890 this fall or keep it next year. If I do sell it, my next one may have the small 200 Verado on it.

Shep,
I am not sure it would be any different with long term maintenance or not either, just something to consider.

The boat would be a bit quicker with the Opti, that I will concede hands down. The Suzi will be quieter, that anyone will admit. The Suzi will run a bit cheaper than the Opti because your not dumping the oil in (that one you will probably want to argue about )

The original question, however, never mentioned Merc's so why even bring it up!

My dealer, The Boat Dock, is a Suzuki guy, so that is my option. I don't have to go really fast as the waters here in NE are not really that big but I do need to get out of the hole. Has Tuffy not tested this boat with a 175 on it? I am SO excited about this boat but I really want to make sure I am making the right decisions!! Thanks for the help guys.

Zach, don't over think this. You have purchased the boat. The motors you are considering will handle the boat just fine. It all comes down to whether you want to sink another $2,500.00 into the project.

Flip a coin, call the dealer and tell him which you want rigged................crack a cold one and count down the days until it arrives!

Don't look back, go forward and enjoy your new rig!!

There are quite a few with 150's on the transom, and they run great. I expect you will see about 50 MPH or so out of the 175, maybe a bit better.
