One thing I do every year is make my wish list on Cabelas web site. It's kind of like a gift registry for guys. I get crankbaits, planer boards, ice fishing gear etc...

It's pretty sweet, they just have to enter your name and location and boom there's your wish list. Now, if I could just get my mother in law to use the site I'd be set.

This year, it's probably going to be a new leadcore rod, a whole list of crankbaits (will be happy with any from my list), the remote for my Motorguide Wireless, and more. My wife has a great program worked out, it seems like for every $100 I spend on her, I get 1 new crankbait

gnwc rookie and jerry reminded me of two imortant things with there post...
My favorite thing to see under the tree or on my birthday... those little crank bait boxes wrapped up! my kids are now 15 and 17 but for the last ten or 15 years i have always looked forward to those not so profesionally wrapped little boxes ,,, My son was sharp! he knew his dad and what caught fish,,, always a thunderstick jr.. or walleydiver or shadrap, he knew what was in the many plastic storage boxes and how they were marked and labled for the appropriate contense ,,, its my daughter that was a bit unconventional, her eye for crank baits always drifted to the cute sparkly chubby stuff with the glitter and the largest eyeballs known to fit on a bait. chubby pink and yellow ,, if it looked like a bumble bee or ladybug or just goofy cute. she would buy it... wrap it and hand it to me with her big smile.... lets face it anything fishing related got fiddled with non stop wile the bulk of the gifts were opened by my wife and kids... but a couple boxes of crank baits,,, a fish pole from my wife and i wouldnt need another gift for a year... fast forward ..... this june my 17 year old daughter asks me to take her fishing in the morning as her brother is not home and she doesnt have to be at the piggly wiggly for work till around 1 ... she just wants to get some sun and read her book a bit... now we dont troll much as we have found comfort in a 7 foot rod and a 16th oz jig... but she wasnt that ambitious and rather than handing her a slip bobber rig in flat calm conditions at 8 in the morning i fired up the kicker and started trolling... besides the mud had been on fire for weeks.. as i pull the rods out of the locker i told her to pick out some cranks... she skips over the 3 boxes packed with thunder jrs and digs out something that hadnt seen daylight ever i think... she grabs my box of misfits, this box is made up of all the non traditional bass type or free crank baits i got for ordering a magazine , i think one says skidoo on it and well there just things that dont fit in . i certainly cant put a baby thunderstick in with a thunderstick jr much less these things... anyway... as she opens the box and starts picking out cranks she smiles and hands me one... oh no im thinking.. and then she hands me another... she remembered all the ones she so carfully picked out as gifts for me over the years. She with her big smile ,im sure could tell by how clean and brand new looking not only the storage box was but also every bait in it... that i never used them once.. i felt like dirt but she just smiles and hands me them one at a time as i put them on and send them out . after about 15 min and as we pass the transition line from gravel to mud we have our first board go back.. fish on and i handed her the rod... i netted it and our first fish was a 21 incher... a big smile on her face again as a 3 or 4 lb fish is rare when we are anchord and fishing the rocks.. interesting program but as we boated fish surprisingly timed perfectley apart by a few min.. my daughters program was unique ,after we boated a fish with one of her seemingly goofy unapitizing crank baits she would make me take it off and would hand me another crank bait even more silly... she would then wipe down the used one(that we just caught a fish on!) and place it back in the misfit box ... after about an hour and a half she said its time to go .. need to get home and shower before work... we had 9 nice fish in the box and threw back two fish that were in the 5 pound range somewere... one of my best if not the best day i had on the water this year for size of fish .. every fish a big smile and a new chubby overfed goldfish style crank bait with its eyes almost bulging out... im glad that it was just her and i ... my son would have most surly taken over as first mate and ran all the common heavy hitter crankbaits.. my daughter would have dove into her book and wound a fish up or grabbed the net when it was her turn... it was a good day , ill never forget it ... in my garage i have a shelf with 20 or so boxes full of cranks , all labeled and marked with there contence.... the unmarked misfit box is now marked ,TOP SECRET ! tournaments only, i dont know , i dont think she noticed yet that the misfit box with all the gifts she carfully picked out for me since she was like 4 has a name , if not i hope we get out togather and she does notice. i can see the smile now... they grow fast ... next year off to collage... i hope the misfit box doesnt get set aside for another ten years... i will do my best to avoid this from happening .. just do me one favor .. if you have a box like this full of well intentioned gifts from people you love .. go out to the shed , throw some dirt on em.. at least make it look like you used them... it is uncomfortable when your once little nieve little girl gets older and can see for herself that you never even used them and still can smile and hand them to you one by one.. and then the ugly things catch fish... thank god they caught fish... remember to throw dirt on em... remember

Bradley, Nice story! Thanks, Are not children the greatest gift in the world! So often they humble us and remind us that it isn't always about how succesful one is but more importantly the quality of life and the moments shared together that makes trips like those the success we remember the most. My boys have done the same thing to me many times, more often than not I let them run the show as it's not about the fish in my boat anymore as I always have kids in the boat.

Good luck
Tyee

speaking of storys , are there any good books recomended that came out recently for the walley or fisherman in general?
oh and add greg bohn's slip bobber book to the list... i did . also one of those fish cradle things you put the fish in when putting them on your digital scale... i have torn a gill on a fish or two over the years on the scale hook... they shake and hurt themselves makes you sick when it happens .... my wife got me a large digital clock that mounts to my boat dash... lol i always stay out a bit too long and she misses me i guess... thinks i forget to check the time.. even though i have a clock on my gps and cell phone.. now i have this thing with 3 inch noumbers on it looking at me every time i look at my dash ... oh well... brad

Nothing turns a thread sour as fast as hairy man affection...

Santa Bahls is going to add both of you to the "dull hooks for Christmas" list.

Bradley, shouldn't that be "Can ya feel the Man love?"

All I want for Christmas is a paid trip to the Shrink to help me cope and get past that mental image.
