| i know it's only october but i'm already thinking about ice fishing. i'll be trying a lake that has a major river flowing in and out of it that has walleye in it. i'll be setting up a deadstick or tip-up while jigging. with al things equal (depth, stucture, clarity, etc.) would i want to set up at the inlet or outlet end of lake? i probably won't be able to get on until mid/late winter due to ice conditions. any advice helpful. thanx...mike | |

Location: LaCrosse, WI | At the mid to late ice stage, I would suggest concentrating on the northern 1/3 of the lake. This sounds pretty similar to Petenwell.
As for the deadstick, I will either use a deadstick about 4-5' from my jigging rod, or will drill holes near my tip ups so I can jig near the tip ups once in a while. You'd be surprised how often that deadstick gets hit when you're jigging next to it.
At that time of year, you will want to find some kind of deep water structure. The fish will probably have moved off of any weedbeds they were on earlier. Find a flat that is right next to a steep break or a deep hole. This gives you a chance to set up on top of the flat and fish everywhere on the break to find out how deep they are.
