| Just curious how other's hunting has been over the last few years? Personally we are seeing few to no adult does, but about the same number of bucks. being in EAB, that isn't so good though.

| I chose more bucks and fewer doe. This is my 3rd year hunting the same property. I can't totally agree wtih the Doe numbers being totally down, but this is by far the best number of bucks I've seen. unfortunately we didn't tag any bucks this year. One was passed for a sticker, and the other passed for a larger buck that never stopped and said "HI".
It seems the deer movement was less this year than two years ago, but last year was dreadfully slow. with only 1 buck to show for opening weekend/whole season.
So it seems numbers may be down, but more bucks to be seen? I hope they're on the move this coming weekend.

Location: LaCrosse, WI | I should of voted for generally better just because I spent more time on the water than in the woods. I saw a few smaller bucks, but spent more time pulling cranks and catching big Saugers. I'm really looking forward to the muzzleloader season, that's when the real season starts for me.
Good luck to everyone on the rest of your season.

| Slower this year. But I hunted different place again this year. Weather sucked. Too moist, and too windy Saturday.
I need to find a better place again. I had a great place for a dozen years. Three diffeent places in the past 5 years sucks. Maybe I'll sell the boat and all the fishing stuff, buy more land, and concentrate on hunting again.

Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere | my eyesight and hearing needs to be checked,, i saw nothing... my son saw nothing... the guy next to me shot a dear sunday morning.. didnt see what it was ,, he was compelled to gut it out 50 yards from me on my side of the property line ,, then drag it 30 yards then walk 150 yards to the field , jump on his wheeler and decide he could drag his deer out of a cedar swamp without an atv trail.... so now its 9 am and the swamp is as quiet as a mouse.. my son makes it to 11;30 and gives me a buzz... he said he was starting to get jumpy ... lets go watch the packer game... walked out and i didnt see a hunter in the woods maybe 3 pickups on the side of the road for the 15 mile home... im not happy so far.. oh ya thanksgiving morning is the next chance to get out.. still dont have an EAB tag filled so i guess seeing nothing is better then seeing 5 bucks and not being able to shoot... oh well... good hunting...

| 5 hunters 5 deer opening weekend, nothing huge but a success all together, had to fight 600 acreas of corn and the 12 guys following the chopper around all day Sat, and Sun. About 40 deer came out of it and a dozen or more yotes! Unfortunately they all went the other direction and the drivers only managed a few! Couple of nice ones too! Looking forward to them getting settled in by Turkey day!
Good Luck

Location: Manitowoc, WI | Ok! This is really starting to piss me off! 5 day into the season, 4 bucks within shooting range, one 2 1/2 year old nice 8 pointer 75 yds away and some birdbrain decides to turn Manitowoc county into an Earn A Buck unit. Where are all the does? I hope the $24 I paid for my tag really helps out the DNR because I sure as hell am not thinning out the heard yet! Ok I'm done venting for now!

Location: Rhinelander | 5 days of hunting with my sons Keith and Brian and Keith's buddy. We had a BLAST camping, saw plenty of deer, and harvested 6. Keith shot a Spike opening day, Brian a 7, and I shot a hole in the air. The seer on my A Bolt stuck for some reason, twice, delaying the shot by a second. Cost me a nice 17" or so wide 6. Oh well...Weird deal, it's whisper clean. So, Keith hunted the rest of the trip with his M44 7.62X54R ( that old Russian rifle is a life taker for sure, he shot two does today 'offhand' at about 150 yards and dropped them both in their tracks) and I inherited the 7MM Mag. Keith sporterized hid M44 altering the bolt throw direction, drilling and tapping for a scope, and removing the bayonet. She shoots very straight, hits the shoulder well and will kill any deer in North America at 200 yards. Not bad for a gun built in the early 40's. I have to get that done before next year on mine; I got lucky and found one at Fleet Farm two years ago that had never been fired. Cost me $89.00.
I hunted a spot Keith had picked out scouting last September in a bedding area between two oak ridges. I got a decent 8, and a nice doe in a two-fer 5 minute wild chase scene, it was extremely cool to experience. That buck had nothing on his mind but the doe, and it cost him dearly. I took the doe in her tracks after watching her rip back and forth across the area I was hunting with no buck in sight. I figured she was 'entertaining', but got tired of all the running about and was pretty certain she was heading out of the area so I took an opportunity at about 115 yards when she slowed to a trot. Soon as I dropped her, the buck's rack appeared in some alders about another 50 out; he was totally baffled where his sweetie went. He dashed about in the thick stuff not offering a shot, then suddenly shot out of the alders and saw the doe. He was OUT of Dodge then, but made the mistake of coming at me at a dead run. I took him head on and sent a Nosler through and through, yet he kept burning, so as he made a turn about 60 yards out still booking top end I tried to plink one into his neck. Hit him pretty good both times, but off through the high ridges he went.
I went in and got Keith after dressing and tagging the doe, and we went after that buck. 600 yards as the crow flies and a freaking leg burning mile including the hills and valleys later, he kicked out and tried to make it over the next ridge struggling hard. He was trying to make it over the next ridge and drop into a huge valley below, which Keith discouraged with a 150 yard shot from the M44. He was spent anyway, taking a 7MM Mag in the neck and another through the neck and out the hinder; how he ran ANYWHERE is a mystery to us both.
Brian lives in the area, so Keith and his buddy shared the camper Friday through Sunday while I visited with Brian and Sarah, and I stayed in the woods Thursday for setting our stands and Monday to today. All in all, it was an incredible hunt on public land, Keith really knows his stuff. We met a really cool young man who was holding down the last 600 yards down from me, and made a new friend. Ken is in High School, but like so many Wisconsin young men this week was off school and in the woods with his climber at dawn, out at dark. Between the two of us, me in my ladder stand WAY up on top, and he in his climber, anyone starting down that stretch turned back and went elsewhere; it was perfect.
Keith and Brian hunted Oak Ridges, and saw lots of deer. All in all, we had a great trip and filled up the freezer, so Slamr can breath easy that there will be a personal cooler or two of venison hamburger this year.
I saw 13 Saturday of which 2 were bucks, 9 Sunday of which 3 were bucks and one was a monster, 10 Sunday of which 1 was a buck, and Monday saw a buck and two does before the chase scene began on the other side of my ladder stand. I didn't hunt Tuesday much, I was too busy dragging deer with Keith, and we left before the 30 MPH winds hit.
What's even better is we have the rest of season to hunt, Sue and I in a blind here at home, and some herd control tags out on Plum Creek land near here. Black powder, then the Anterless season, too.

| We saw fewer deer this year. There were 4 guys in our group this year, 2 of which did not see a deer the first two days.
I was fortunate enough to have my son share the stand with me for most of my time in the woods this year. He will be old enough to hunt next year, so hopefully I am teaching him a few good habits. His mother gets up every morning and makes him a thermos of hot chocolate, so that means I have to help him drink some of it. One of the most enjoyable seasons I have had due to the time spent with my son. With my new job, it was nice to get some quality time together.
It was a little bittersweet as my Dad didn't hunt with us this year. He was in Arizona. Said he will never do that again. Realized how much he misses the time spent with hunting buddies and how important these 9 days really are.
We did have some success with the actual hunting as well. I hunted in an EAB zone also. Shot a doe on Saturday. Shot a decent buck on Sunday. Shot another doe on Thanksgiving.

Location: LaCrosse, WI | Good job Dan.
I shot a nice buck on Thanksgiving day. It would have been an 18" 8 pointer but one side of the rack was broke off. It was 9" from the center of the head to the farthest point on the remaining side. The side that was broken off appeared to be heavier at the base. I also shot a doe yesterday just in case we go to earn a buck again.
The only bummer is that I don't have a buck tag left for muzzleloader this year.

Location: Appleton, WI | Big factor in our lack of success this season has been the high winds!
When it is this windy, deer hold tight, because:
1) the wind has got everything moving. Their eyesight is impared
2) the wind has got the noise up to a deafening roar. They might as well be deaf
3) the wind is whipping scent past their noses, that they cannot process what they are smelling
So, If your 3 biggest defences are of little-to-no use, you stay in bed and ride it out.

Location: Menasha, WI | We saw a total of 17 deer for 8 guys in 6 days of hunting. We harvested 7 deer. I shot a spike and a 5 pointer. This season was not good for section 14 in Ashland cty. We ended up with 3 legal bucks, and the rest were nubbys or does. I agree however, not a lot of adult does at all. I was hoping to shoot a doe after Saturday and never saw another deer. I saw 4 deer on Saturday and shot those two, and then crap the rest of the week. Attached are a few pics of our deer we shot and also our portable camp we set up in the National Forest.

After a slow first weekend, things picked up on Turkey day. Nothing in the morning, but after watching the Packer game, I headed out at 3:00 PM with Lauren to sit in the two person ladder stand. She will be old enough to hunt next year, and she likes getting out with her dad. I told her she was responsible for her half of the area, and I would watch my half. About 3:50, she tapped my leg, and slowly pointed to the thicket to her right. I saw a deer making it's way to the trail, and got the BAR ready. When a big doe stepped into the shooting lane, I ka-potched her right behind the shoulder at 40 yards. She bolted into the thicket behind us, followed by a smaller deer, and all went silent. We waited 10 minutes, got out of the stand, and went to where the deer had been shot. No blood right away, but Lauren found the trail, and about 30 yards away, she found the doe, assuming ambient temperature. Lauren was pumped, as she did everything except pull the trigger, and gut out the deer by herself. I helped with that, and she dragged the deer to the house with the ATV. I can't wait til next year to hunt with her for real.
The next day, Friday, Eric and I hunted, without success, in the AM. I went out early in the PM, and he followed around 3:00PM. Without his rifle, he wanted to sit with me. I said OK, and we sat quietly, watching and hoping for deer. Around 3:30, he whispered he wanted to know how to use the grunt call. I got mine out, and gave a couple short, low grunts. I told him I use it sparingly, and put it away. We settled to watch for deer, and not more than 5 minutes, we both saw a deer out in front through the thick stuff. I immediately saw antlers, and motioned for Eric to get ready. He had the BAR up, and when the deer stood broadside in an opening at 50 yards, the Browning barked. The deer kicked, ran forward, then turned and went back the way it came from. A minute later, I heard it flopping on the Adams County turf. Eric was shaking uncontrollably, telling me "It's a Buck, Dad. I got a buck!" We got down, found hair, and the blood trail. Following it, we came around a pine thicket, and there it was! A nice 8 pointer! Quite a nice first Buck for the boy! I was real proud of Eric, and it was fun to watch this take place.
I've been hunting my 8 acres next to the Mom-in-Law's place in Adams County for the past dozen years, but usually after Turkey Day, never the whole season. I've taken 1 small buck, and about 10 does in that time frame. Never hunted the whole season until this year. I think I will hunt it the whole season again next year. I had one of the better hunts ever this year!
Below are a couple shots of the deer, and one for PETA!

| Nice deer guys. Our hunt also improved Thursday/Friday, I was able to take a small 8 pointer opening morning and put a dandy hundred yard head shot on a big bodied 6 (well actually a 3, one side was missing) with the wife Tuesday. Picked up a nice doe walking on Friday and we kicked up 4 more doe later on, all harvested. No big bucks this year, but the freezers are full. Total of 4 bucks and 6 doe.

Location: Manitowoc, WI | Great job Eric!!!! Congrats to you!!! Isn't it great when we can share the hunting experience with kids for the first time? I'm hoping my daughter will sit with me next year during the late season.
My season is still evolving: I passed 3 bucks during the gun hunt and 4 does over the weekend. Now it's time for the muzzleloader and, hopefully, some cold weather and snow to get those big bucks moving in the place I hunt!!! I know they're still around because they have been seen but we need some cold and some snow to cover the ground so they have to get active earlier and start searching for food....then the fun begins!!!

| Well friday resulted in a poke at an 8pter that I missed, but figured the tough shot was worth the chance that late in the season. No blood and the deer ran away unscathed. Saturday had two does and a fork come through at a very makeable range, one doe in the freezer and I couldn't find a way past all the trees to connect on that buck. oh well. Good season overall.
My buddy's missed buck turned into a hit, unfortunately he didn't find it til tuesday. Sad ending to a nice buck. He's color blind and feels aweful that he "couldn't" see it.
I may give the Muzzle loader hunt a try this weekend. I still think "Mr. Big" may be around.

| We had about the same luck as the last 5 years. We rarely see any bucks, but the Does are always around for the taking. My kids are spoiled and have no idea what it's like to sit for a week and hope you might see a deer or 2 walk past you. We are usually done by Noon on the second day of the season. Purple Skeeter

| we had a great hunt here in mn opening day i heard uncle billys pre 64 mod 70 270 win bark 3 times right at 1 min past legal shooting time, he harvested a nice 8 point buck a big doe and a yearling doe, not bad for 71 years old. after that my cousin glen got a nice 6 pointer along with a big doe, i had 4 bucks pass my stand at first light one spike a fork a six pointer and a small 8 point i was holding out for mr big that gave me the slip last year, about 8am a real nice 10 pointer came across the clearing chaseing a big doe, i had one shot before he got back in the swamp, i dropped him at 140yds with the kimber 270 short mag, i have never seen a deer die faster, i was using a 140 gr accubond nosler a perfect,''lucky'' high lung hit, we had six deer hanging on the meat pole before noon, i still have 2 doe tags left, for muzzle loader season. our hunt was better than last year. we saw allot of deer , they get pushed into our land and stay there, gone huntin mike lewis | |

Location: DeForest, WI | We didn't see the greatest numbers this year in the Drummond/Barnes area but our group of 9 connected on 13 the first two days. I think the main reason that we are not seeing as many deer on our usual stands is due to the earlier season dates we had the last two years. The deer are in full rut, and are traveling more at night. Shown by the many nights traveling back from the tavern and seeing tons of activity right around the cabin. Come daylight nothing.
Still had fun as usual. | |

| 16 year old Outdoorsman Chase Eberly bags a HUGE BUCK November 23, 2007 during the Wisconsin deer gun season, as Chase is the outdoors columnist for the local Newspaper here in Freedom WI we are limiting the photos of this MONSTER BUCK. Here's a peek!
I can only say that I am proud to have been able to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity Chase experienced this past week. There have been many moments in this fathers’ life that my kids have so often given me the pleasure to experience these feelings. There is no denying that this again has been one of those moments I will treasure for ever.
There have already been numerous photos taken via cell phones from passing vehicles. Some other unauthorized photos were seen being taken when we registered it and got gas for the short ride home. The animal nearly caused many collisions and many thumbs ups were given by passer bys as well as many tickets could have been issued for vehicles noticed speeding to only get a glimpse!
My only wish was that I let that initial call go to voice mail so I could include a sound file for you as well.
Be sure to read next months copy of the Freedom Pursuit to get all the exciting details of his hunt and how he managed to bag such a trophy!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Chase, I may never shoot another buck because you won't let me shoot one smaller than yours, Needless to say this years hunt was THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD!
Good luck

| Sorry dhunt you feel the need to involve your God. I know WE thanked ours for a great year. My passion for the Outdoors is great and to know that this animal was taken near his prime and of nearly record class is a first for our family of hunting nearly 50 years in Central WI, where I can see 22 hunters from my stand! So yes it is a great achievement for my son! Although this thread is about weather or not the season was good or bad for you......here is the DNR's take on it. A more detailed report is being given today in Madison.
Good Luck
Tyee
MADISON – Hunters registered a preliminary total of 343,644 deer during Wisconsin’s regular nine-day gun deer season. Wildlife officials stress that this is a preliminary figure that will change somewhat. The preliminary call-in total from 2006 nine-day season was 336,211 and in 2005 it was 312,519 deer.
The 2007 harvest showed 125,060 bucks and 218,584 antlerless deer registered. This computes to a 6 percent increase in antlerless deer harvest and a 3.5 percent decline in buck harvest over 2006. Officials also reported a total of 641,432 gun deer licenses were purchased by resident and nonresident hunters.
“All in all, things came together nicely for this year’s hunt,” said Keith Warnke, DNR deer ecologist. “It’s too early to evaluate how the kill will impact individual deer management units, until we have final harvest figures for all seasons, but it looks like deer hunters are enjoying this year’s hunting and filling their freezers.”
