well guys, this morning there was many ice chunks on the river and if not for the steady wind all night, I am sure she would have been bnearly tight this am. The dock thermometer says it 33.2 this am. when the winds calm and the temps get low this weekend, it will be time for the short rods.

One good point is, plan ahead, its only 120 days till ice out.

I'm guessing it is already less than 100 days!!! I don't think they do the guys in the boat in New London any more do they I believe the DNR frowned on it!

Maybe Denny could come up with a environmentally friendly non-Hazard item to put out in front and offer up a prize for the one to guess the closest date and time? Maybe Steve could donate a thing or two, I might be able to offer up something as well any others want to sweeten the pot! Lets get this going again!
Good luck

Nope, still days. In Fremont it barly opened in front of the bridge bar. She was rather thick. Took a drive weds. man, the little wolf only opened in a few area and the wolf is still all the way accross in most places. Im sure its weakened but none the less, did not open. so on the 11th of january we will put the count at 78 and a wake up to april 1st.

65 or less.

This just in, 2 snowmobiles that went down this weekend on the river, the divers that removed them were just in fort fremont. The current is screaming. Careful being on the ice. They actually said to tell people to stay off. lots of bad stuff. With all the snow, and thin ice, I suspect the river will cut loose very early this year, mid march maybe, just post ice breaker.

My head is starting to spin. There is so much snow that the river currents should be good this year and I really bet the wolf will be a mecca of fish. Come to the ice breaker anfd get the low down.

anyone see how the sun is getting hotter and melting snow even though it is really cold?

53 and a wake up people, To april 1st. It probably will not take that long, are you ready???

Ice update. The currents are swirling under the ice so there are many soft to open spots forming daily. As the hot mid day sun gets to working on the blackened ice it softens even more. The edges are soft everywhere as the river rose and ate it away. The ice is floating on the water in many areas.

Watch for the press release for the Ice Breaker 3 taking place at critters sports in winneconne on march 8th and 9th, It is gonna be a doosie!!

49....can it seem so short on such a cold day.

The ice is strong and deep yet on the river. There are friends cutting through 14 inches of ice and getting walleyes. they started last week. I'm sure it has to do with the length of day. It started the same day last year. Hmmmm.....

Lets start a "Green" only Walleye tournament... of course, you and my brother would be automatically in because you guys run an E-tec motor. Guys like me that can only afford a 2 stroke oil burner would have to write Al Gore for permission to enter.

1 gallon of Yamaha Lube is now $28.00 + $300 in carbon offsets per gallon... it's cominig.....

HOLY COW 28 and a wakeup? Is that possible?

Last evening I was in a discussion with a bunch of local river rats. They were discussing what they have seen in the past and what they thought about this years ice and when it would get out of our boats way. After what seemed to be hours of intense discussion which was fuel by the refreshments at Gills Landing, they came up with date. By the 22nd it will be ready to run. So there you have it!!

ICE BREAKER III Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th at critters in winneconne.

BE THERE!!!

OK Wednesday found me driving around surveying the ice. What I found was some places where the ice had snow, and then no snow and then a little dark ice and a little light ice. But one thing stood stong, It was all ice. Fremont will have there trickle open at the next warm spell.

1 Day and a wake up to the ice breaker. Great line up dont miss it, ITS FREE!!! Come out, i think you will be impressed.

24 days and a wake up to the first. Are your lines restrung? Do you have the boat out of the snow pile? Did you sharpen the jigs and find the anchors? Do you have enough oil?

God I cannot wait!!

OK Guys here we go. I took my wednesday drive from northport and royalton and guths and gills an fremont. Here is what I found.

Fremont has open water about 50ft wide where it always opens first. The rest of the ice still looks pretty good. The water is rising in the waupaca river and it looks like a couple days this will open and then it will warm to get the wolf at gills opening. We need solid sun with these warm temps. Guths is solid and north port has a hole by the bridge. The locals say there are still 10"s in newlondon after you get on the ice but be very careful. They go from 10 to 1/2 inch in many places.

Everyone thinks it will be between easter and the next weekend before you will get on the river in fremont and about the first of april for newlondon. I think this will be very close.

I will let youu guys know when she is ready to rock.

Denny

12 days and a wake up.

The ice in fremont continues to give way. The trench is maybe 100 ft wide from the rocks at the upstream and the rocks below the new bridge. The trench is getting darker by fort fremont.

The waupace is almost all open and the ice on the wolf at gills is still THICK. with the slowing of the run off, its gonna be a bit. I was looking back at posts that were made on this thread, It was all speculation and now it is becoming reality.

Looks like a easter sunday will be fun for all as there is no way you are getting a boat in the wolf by then.

Going to depere during the day on wednesday, hopefully I can catch one. You all know its a night bite, LOLOL!!

Do you have everything ready???

10 and a wake up

She is opening, but it will be awhile. The current side has many spots up and down the river that are black and others, mostly down from gills that are open. About 10 to 50 wide. Below northport they are still on ice as well as along X. The incoming snow may help to accelerate this process. Maybe by the 29th. I am still sticking to the 1st.

Have a great day!!

9 and a wake up.

The river is begrudgingly opening. A small path of open water exists in many area. There is flow as well. It will NOT be ready to run in boats this weekend. Get the boat out and ready, take a drive and look at the river. Stop at gills landing, have a burger. Great prices, great food. New owners took over in the fall and they will be open at 9 am everyday with food and fresca's for the fisherman. Tell them Denny Sent ya.

This thread is coming to an end. when the ice is out in fremont and you can run a boat down river through orihula to the mouth we will call the ice out date.

I want to thank everyone for reading along all winter and I hope I did not bore you.

6 and a wake up, to the first of april.

Well, here goes. The river is open about 1/3 across on the current side almost everywhere from gills landing down river. There needs to be significant melting going on for this ice to leave so we can get on by saturday. Right now it would very dangerous as the shelf ice could break off as you run and crush you like a fresca can. There was shell ice this a.m. The water is very cold. I would guess 34 to 35 degree's.

I will let everyone know when it is open for boats. I will take a ride wednesday and get some pics and post thursday. This way all can see.

Thanks

Ok, here is the count ZERO....0......0

The day has come and we can call the count short by 4 days and a wake up this year. From fremont down the river is now nearly ice free. There are a few area that still have shelf ice so one has to watch for more floating chunks and stuff. From fremont upriver there are some shelfs left till you get to gills. The ice is socked in from the tressel up and it is pretty much that way through newlondon. HOWEVER, its not good ice and its ready to sink everyday.

So, when ever you are ready, the river is, from Gills to the mouth. Be careful out there and good fishing.

Should I do this again next year?

Nice report there Denny. I enjoyed the comments, and the reports. I'd vote for next year again if you don't mind.

Good reports Denny, it definitely kept my mind on the river! I made it out of Gills yesterday for the maiden voyage on the wolf. After dodging ice bergs, we got out of there. Had 2 legit bites anchored up, should've been using stingers I guess. Oh well, plan fishing the lower end Saturday morning! See everyone out there!

There are many ice bergs. its safe but keep your eyes open. The water temp reached almost 36 today at the dock but it was 34 this a.m.

Stop by and say hi if you get on the river saturday.

Fort Fremont Marine, just down stream from fremont. we will have some free hot cocoa and coffee available for you.

Keep your eyes open. There were a few areas by Northport the other night that still had ice.
