Ya, his wife might have sent him out there. But in my experience, 3 1/2 inches of solid clear ice can hold a lot more weight then a single man walking out and any gear he would have with him.

The ice varies a lot. I was out scouting yesterday and found areas up to 7", some with 3", and a few fissures that hadn't yet healed with only an inch or so. Most of the area I checked was consistent 5". There has been a few 4-wheelers out in Mansurs Bay already. I'll be hitting my favorite perch spot hard on Saturday.

Bottom line: Don't take anyone's word on ice thickness, be cause it changes in just a short distance. Be careful and be prepared.

Nice ice reports from the same group of guys that will be busting up 3 1/2 inches of ice in 3 1/2 months to get on the water.

Bustin 3 inches this weekend. HA!.

Seriously though major thin stuff. Was out of pipe this weekend. And the ice is so so. Bays of course better. You guys are gettin some cold over the next few days right? Maybe firm up a bit more by the weekend. Depending on rain, which seems to be plentiful here in the illinois river valley.

I bust the ice and get a high dirty mess. I just need a cold front for the trifecta!

I was out on Asylum bay this AM and saw a guy "Spudding" about a 1/2 mile out from me. I thought "to go where no man was ever gone before". Then, I almost wet myself when a crack came right through the hole I was jigging out of.

The Miss is tight?

Darn, we might actually have to break ice to get the boats out in January this year.

Hey Shep, I am going to have an open house across the street this sunday. Can you turn your t.v. so I can watch the packer game? with my spotting scope?

Jayman, Hutch has been tring to keep it open and its getting tough. He is still confident we will be able to get in. Small boats for sure. Mark and I went out 2 years ago and it was a adventure for sure. I thought the ice was going to come thru the side of the boat. But I will say fishing was AWSOME.
