| Cash brings up a good point on the VHS thread about people cleaning/disinfecting their boat livewell and hulls. I'm curious how many people carry/used bleach water to disinfect their boats.
Honest answers please. |

Location: McFarland, WI | I used Virkon all last summer in bilge and livewells after fishing Winnebago and other infected water systems. It was far handier than bleach since it is in a powder form in a plastic tub. MSDS scared some people but that info is exposure to the powder not the dilute solution. The product is designed for this job. If you read MSDS for bleach it is probably equally scary. I disinfected boat at launch or the car wash and rinsed it out at home. Several times I went from launch directly to a car wash due to scum in water at launches. I sprayed it on my trailer bunks as well as I could with the boat on the trailer. You miss that surface area. I have no financial interest in the company and the stuff isn't cheap. Unless people (fisherman and recreational users) adapt a procedure for disinfectiong their boats, all this minnow stuff is irrelevant.

| Honestly, in the past two years I haven't even had my boat touch the water, been way too busy with traveling but yes, I would disinfect it after it has been in the water. However, I haven't had bleach on the boat. It is a good point though, I live 1000' from a boat launch and come to think of it I don't remember seeing anyone really disinfecting any craft after it's been loaded back on the trailer. There are more recreational boaters that I see launch than fishermen (or woman). |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Is bleach ok to allow to run into our waterways? What would be the best chemical to kill this that wont kill more than VHS in our systems? The hands down best bio-degradable product.

| I've never had my boat in any water but The Wolf River in the 5 plus years that I have had it. Put it in in the spring, take it out in the fall. |

| I do believe that the very small amount that would be used to disinfect would naturaly break down. |

| Stacker, Bleach is what the DNR recommmends, why must you always be a rebel? LOL
Overall interesting results, keep the votes comeing.
For the guy selling his cranks for a boat....trying selling a kidney, you might be able to afford to keep a few cranks then.

Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | The low percentage solution recommended to disinfect boats won't cause a problem unless a LOT of boats are draining the water back into the lake all in one place. Bleach breaks down naturally into water and table salt reasonably quick. Personally, I think it allowing the bleach solution to run directly back into the waterway isn't the best idea and that it would be much better to allow it to drain onto the parking lot well away from the launch.
A bigger concern of mine is that someone is going to carelessly dump a bleach solution onto an open cell on a battery or some spilled battery acid - bleach is a fairly strong base material and when mixed with a strong acid (like battery acid) it would be possible to generate chlorine gas.

Location: Appleton wi | Ok here my honest answer. I have never disinfected last year due to the fact i did not put my boat into 2 different body of water within 7day period and it just worked out that way. Is that still ok with dnr recommendations? Is it really a good idea for everyone to be doing this at the launch? This year i will follows the dnr recommendation and disinfect my boat if i go to 2 different body's of water with a few days but it will be done at home when i do my ritual boat wash/rinse at home after a day on the water? |

| How is everyone disinfecting the carpet on your trailer bunks, that retains moisture, therefore bacteria? |

| How about the locks between green bay and winnebago.?Are they going to be open this year? Why werent they closed before that? This is all hindsight, better make it look good, politics. The dnr knew vhs was in winnebago five years ago.You dont think it got spread to other lakes between then and now?I'm all for prevention measures if they would help, but common sense, the history of the last five years, and the results of this poll, would suggest that this is a vane and impractical effort.I wish it was different, I'm just being real about it. |

RedneckT is right, bleach breaks down quickly and the diluted amount needed to kill the VIRUS would not have much of an effect.

| I voted Sometimes.
Last year, before I went to Vilas and Oneida lakes, I put a solution in the bilge and livewell. Also, before the FLW League Championship at Moline, I did the same after the MWS on Green Bay. Had to put something in the livewell. I sure didn't put many fish in it!
If you read up on VHS, you'll see that there is a threshold amount of water they worry about transferring the virus. Not sure the bunks on the trailer hold enough water.
Also, the lock system to Green Bay from Bago doesn't matter for this, as water flows from Bago to Green Bay over the Dams, and both are infected. One of the locks is a lift, too, so no direct openeing there. I'm sure the operators of the lift make sure all the water is drained from the bilge and other potential retention areas on the boats they are lifting over. I mean, they work for the State, don't they?

Bleach breaks down into water and table salt.... you can't get much greener than that.
Again, the only way this would be a problem is if a few hundred boats all dump their water/bleach mixture in the same spot at the same time and it all ran into a small sheltered bay or cove. Even something the size of Miller's Bay in Oshkosh would be pretty hard to damage if everyone was using the dilute mixture DNR recommends.
Are you going to have a display regarding VHS at the Ice Breaker? A big poster with a couple bullets regarding what it is, what the new rules are, and how to disinfect your boat would show how green you are....

| Shep,
"the lock system to Green Bay from Bago doesn't matter for this, as water flows from Bago to Green Bay over the Dams, and both are infected"
My understanding is it does matter. Michigan in not uniformally infected through out the lake just as Winnebago is not uniformally infected. When the virus shows up on bodies of water and sytems this large you get spots where VHS is and not the entire lake. Once the virus has a kill the virus has a good chance it isn't in that same area so if you are fishing on Michigan you could be fishing in a place VHS is present and when you move to Winnebago system you could launch in a VHS free zone and just transfered the virus to that area of the system.
This is just my understanding though.

Yes, the Ice Breaker will have a dnr booth. They will have VHS related items as well, I am sure.
I guess what I was asking is this, every boat that pulls out at county A boat landing, in the hundreds on a saturday disinfects and it runs into the bay right there, after several days, no worries?
