I have never fished on Lake Erie but would like to this spring in mid May. My girlfriend is coming with and is giving up a week in the north woods in a secluded cabin on the water to catch walleyes.

Now...those of you who know the fairer sex and their needs, I am wondering if any one can provide information on cabins with all of the creature comforts that are for rent.

I am told that the fishing this time of year in Port clinton is very good. Is this true? I sure dont want to dissappoint mamma bear.

Any info on fishing and lodging would be greatly appreciated.

There is no shortage of lodging in Port Clinton. Your best bet would be to google 'lodging port clinton ohio'

As far as fishing goes, you'll be in for a real treat. By that time, the weather will be more stable, and the fishing will surely be excellent. You should have no problem catching walleyes just north of Catawba around the islands, or in 'the bowl' which is the area between the islands and reefs (to the west).

There are more than a few programs that will catch fish consistantly.

If you're a troller, the spoon bite will be heating up in early May. Pulling Michigan Stingers and/or Silver Streak Jr Streaks behind Dipsys and Jet Divers is the ticket. This can, and does, put many, many fish in the boat. Flatlining cranks, such as Reef Runners and deep Husky Jerks also put more than their share of fish in the boat at this time. The average fish caught while trolling cranks is usually a little bigger than when running the spoon program, as well. You'll catch more fish on spoons, but the bigger fish are generally caught on cranks.

Crawler harnesses are also an area favorite. #5 colorado blades with six or eight beads behind it are popular. Rund these behind snapweights, inline weights, or even behind the Dipsy/Jets.

If trolling isn't your bag, you can still fill the cooler easily casting weighted harnesses/mayfly rigs. Get upwind of the fish, and drift over them casting the rigs with a half of a crawler on them. You can also drift the unweighted harnesses behind bottom bouncers, which is very effective, as well.

There are many different ways to catch Erie walleyes. Any of the above techniques have proven successful day in and day out on the lake. May will be a great time to hit the lake. It always is. Trolling will require a lot more equiptment that you may or may not have (I don't know if you do or not, of course).

Great time of the year. I'd go when the Canadian season opens, 3rd Saturday in May. There is some awesome fishing around Pelee Island at that time.

I also recommend Holiday Village Resort. Doug's a great guy, and his Charter Captains are willing to share info. The facilities are great. Here's a link.
