Got the very rare opportunity today in touring the Burger Boat Company here in Manitowoc. Our tour guide this day was Katie Ross, Marketing Director of the firm, and I might ad, someone who knows alot about yatch building!
With the grace of touring high profile customers, such as past customer Scotty Pippen of the then Chicago Bulls, to the current customer Mr. & Mrs. Charles Walgreen, Jr. and their boat - SIS W, Katie treated our home-school group - mix of parents and students - with a presentation even royalty would love.
The best of it was the company had 4 yatchs in different stages of development and gave the tourist a unique perspective of these giant yatchs, being put together from the start, to finish. Sure, seeing the men in action in the woodworking shop was great, and the welders and grinders were given high marks as well, but when we stood under the bow of the 126' 100,000 ton SIS W, did we truly understand the overwhelming job of building such boats!
Then as we ended the tour through the design phase of the company, the kids attention knob was turn up to the highest notch. First it was the drawing room where the interior designer showed off his work, then on to the most interesting man in the room who had the hard job of converting the customers wishes into computer language, and then on to the man who rendered the information into art form for final customer approval.
And did those kids like that big time. He twirled the boat around on the computer screen that would give the customer different angle views of the ship. He could even bring the watcher into the ship, and no doubt it reminded the kids of their favorite computer game. I bet they'll study twice as hard on their gaming in hopes of landing that job!
There is alot more to the story and only hit some of the highlights. But the thought now is to call up PWT Director Charlie Moore and find out if there is a MAXIMUM limit on boat size. Lets see, their smallest is 85' long and only costs a cool 5 mil.
Naw, don't believe mine wifey would let that fly!
