Location: Oshkosh,WI | Technology has played a huge part in the marine industry over the past few years and continues to do so. With all the new optimax, and ficht motors on the market is the 4 stroke really the answer? Granted the 4 strokes are almost silent but from what I have seen is that they are heavier, bigger and have a harder time getting the bigger boats out of the water than the opti's or ficht's. Is the fuel consumption that much greater than the high end 2 strokes to make up for the extra $$$$ for the 4 stroke? One nice thing about the 4 is that there is no worry about having to run out of oil while in the middle of the lake.
For those of you that now have 4's how do you like them compared to a 2 in all aspects?

| It really isn't what we as fishmen prefer or want anymore, but rather what we will be able to purchase in the future. There is a push at many levels of government to eliminate two stroke motors for snowmobiles, boats, and a number of other recreational vehicles due to their significantly higher pollution levels.
It is without question that the overall power to weight ratio advantage goes to the two stroke motors, but I beleive that with enough testing and development (much of which has taken place in recent years) the four stroke motor will become comparable in performance. Add that to the fact that you can actually hear your fishing partner talk while its running and over time people will come to accept the four stroke as the preferred motor to have on their boat.

Location: Evanston, Il | Me & a bunch of buddies go up to Canada every year & the lodge owner had 2 stoke Mercs & switched to 4 stroke Hondas. I couldn't believe the fuel difference from the 2 to the 4 stroke. We went places that we usually need a pony tank with the 2 stroke the used the 1/2 a tank with the 4 stroke. The only drawback of the 4 strokes that we saw were that they had trouble starting cold in the morning & that they cost more to buy. The noise difference is amazing too. Of course these were lodge boat 16-18 foot Lunds with 25 & 50 engines & their might be a difference with bigger boats & bigger engines. They are bigger & heavier & I thought it was worth it. I do miss the smell of the 2 strokes, there is nothing like it. Just my two cents.

In a contest using Mercury 4 strokes and Opti max motors, a Merc dealer put identical fuel cells on equal horsepower Merc Optis and 4 strokes. They started the mortors at the same time, at the same idle speed, and the idea was to guess the running time of both, and which would run out of fuel first. The 4 stroke ran out WAY before the Opti. As I remember what was said at the Merc OEM Boat Builder meeting a week ago, the Opti ran for something like an additional hour on the same amount of fuel.
There's lots new on the Horizon with the 'green tech' two strokes, and hight performance X technology 4 strokes.
