Location: Rhinelander | A full field hit the water on the River out of Red Wing, MN this morning in what can only be described as miserable conditions in rain, wind, and cold temps. As a cold front moved through, the skies cleared off and temperatures reached near 50 degrees, but the wind howled all day.
The tough conditions didn't deter Pat Brookshaw and Co Angler Dennis Gullickson from bringing a 5 fish 28 pound basket to the scales for the win. Pat was fishing pool 3 on a small hump about 30 yards long in a slough. His first two fish, caught by his Co, Dennis, were on cranks, but as the weather changed the water dirtied up and they went to live bait for the rest of their limit.
Pat reported that Dennis caught every one of the fish as he controlled the rig and held on that small hump in the high winds.
Greg Rudisill took second just a little over three pounds back, Justin Webster took third weighing in 16-07, Brad Powers took fourth with 15-14, and Mike Schommer took fifth weighing in 15-11.

| Someone ought to talk to Kevin Hunt about leaving the cold, wet weather home for a change.
Impressive weights for the river. Congrats to the winners. |

Location: LaCrosse, WI | This was an impressive event. These guys put up with some tough conditions and high water. I don't want to take anything away from the guys who put together a pattern for this event, but I want to make sure that the river doesn't get a bum rap.
Big weights aren't nearly as uncommon as people think. Last year it took 32 lbs to win.
On the tour last year Jason P had 3 days over 23 lbs with one being over 30.
I'd just like to point out that the Mississippi gets a bad name a lot of times. I've seen July and August tournaments take over 30lbs. We did an event last June on pool 4 where there were 70 boats and there were 4 bags over 30lbs. I think that the poor conditions of the league championship have left a bad impression on some people. It's not great lakes fishing, but there are usually some good weights at Mississippi river events. |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | Good point Rookie. Also, don't leave out Jeff Ryan's unbelievable four day weight of #87.25 to win the 2006 FLW Red Wing event. He averaged #20lbs+ everyday. Definitely some good fish to be had in the Mississippi!

| Marshall, I agree with you 100%. I meant very impressive for the current conditions the anglers faced this last weekend and the river levels as you mentioned. |

| It was ugly, lots of junk floating down the river, fowling any presentation you put down, my spot fell apart with the wind switch and blowing it full of junk, and fighting the current, as usual I had some nice fish in the spot where I was, wed I pulled a 30" out the spot. All the typical spots for this time of the year where hosed, water temp droped from 50 to 46 on Sat.
Pool 3 was alot cleaner. Oh well next time |
