| Reports we got at the shop were generally good, today.
Talked to guys that did well trolling cranks after midnight down around Ford River. Some others I talked to that fished harnesses down there in the morning zeroed - too calm and too bright. Strong S.E. wind all day should have turned that spot on by the end of the day. Guess we'll find out tomorrow.
Heard of a few fish trolled up by the Escanaba light house last night. The couple people we talked to that fished from shore in the harbor didn't have much to report.
The Escanaba River was decent for the few guys we talked to. A friend of mine limited out this morning with 5 fish that went almost 15 pounds - jig and a crawler.
Mixed catches of perch and walleyes off the Gladstone campgrounds.
Heard of several fish caught trolling crankbaits in the upper bay after daylight this morning, including one 32 incher. Sold lots of Ripsticks and Super Rogues today to guys fishing up there. We went through a little bit of everything, color wise today. No real patterns.
Crawlers seem to be the live bait of choice, with leeches and minnows bringing up the rear - nothing new there.
Today was also the start of the catch and release season for bass in the U.P. I know it's "walleye world" up here for most people, but I'm an absolute sucker for those "brown fish." Diane and I fished the Escanaba River for smallmouth tonight after work. We were about to start when we realized she didn't have her license yet, so she got to be the designated fish netter/photographer for this trip - good job, Girlie! No real giants, but it sure was fun catching bass again! Ended the evening landing 6 smallmouth up to 18 inches, and a small pike. Got one on a Mann's Baby 1- crankbait, one on a white tube jig, and the rest on a chartreuse Senko in less than 3 feet of water. Water temp in the river was 58 to 60 degrees.
