| My speedometer wasn't working when I used my boat today but was working last week when I used it. I see two wires on it and a black tube. I see the wires on it jump from guage to gauge and I assume that they are a power and a ground for the lights on the gauges so I guess it has something to do with the black tube. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can check or look for that would cause the speedometer not to work. Thanks. |

Location: Rhinelander | Check the pitot tube for leaks and for connection to the motor. Trace it down to where it hooks up to your outboard, it's probably off. If not the speedo usually leaks water if the baffle is shot. |

| Super common for the pitot intake to get clogged, especially in spring.
Check the intake.
Usually it is wood from contacting floating sticks while on plane.
Starighten out a fish hook and dig the debris out, if that is the case.
The wires are just for the light in the guage. |

| Sorry don't know much about engines. I see where the tube connects to the engine, but where is the intake located at? Its a mercury 50hp 4 stroke. I see 4 slot holes on each side of the lower unit above the cavitation plate and 7 small round holes just above and forward of the prop and none look plugged. Should I take the tube off at the speedometer and try blowing air through it? Thanks for all the help so far. |

Location: Spring Valley,Il. | There should be a small single hole on the front side of your lower unit.It is probably plugged up with a piece of wood or something.Take a small piece of wire or a small drill bit and unplug it.Most likely this is the problem. You should be careful blowing air through it.If you do blow air through it,make sure you dont use too high psi or you could rupture the tube going to speedometer.

| Klino,
Thanks for pointing out to me where the hole was. Never noticed it there before, was covered by my transome saver and the hole was full of all kinds of crap. Hopefully I got most of it out and it will work next time I take it out. Thanks to everyone for the help. |
