You said you were going to try a 23 pitch Tempest on the E-Tec/X-190. How did it work for you?

You also mentioned you had a pretty good set up with the Raker II 22 pitch. I was wondering what you ran for RPM's at WOT with that prop, and what load you had in the boat. Did that prop show a tendency to porpoise easily at slower speeds like my 20 pitch and did it want to drop off plane easily at the lower speeds also?

When you ran the 21 pitch Cyclone, did it struggle to get out of the hole or could you turn it fast enough to get the boat to pop out easily? What RPM's did you run with the Cyclone? I spoke to a guy at Turbo Props and he thought that I could run a 4 blade through hub exhaust 20 pitch to hook up better at slower speeds in rough water and that the speed would be about the same as my 20 Raker, around 54 mph. He was worried that if I ran a vented or OT style 4 blade prop that it would lose bite at the slower planing speeds as the exhaust would start to bleed out into the blades again. I'd still like to think that a four blade prop would be the easiest to drive in the rougher stuff, but if you ran a 21 I doubt if a 20 would be any better unless you didn't have enough RPM's.

So many variables to consider, and so many styles to play with makes it tough to really get something that will be a good workhorse prop.

Thanks for any info you care to share! If there is any info you need from me just ask.

ABG,
Raker II 22 - 5400-5500 / 57-60 mph / hole shot is sluggish with 2 + full load.
Cyclone 21 & Viper 21 - 5600-5800 / 54-56 mph / hole shot ok - 2 + full load.
Tempest or Trophy - Flo Torq hub kit didn't fit 2008 M2 gear case (any ideas?).

After mounting the motor in the lowest position (top hole) - all props ran well at all ranges. I think this boat maneuvers great why turning - the 4 blade Cyclone 21 might get the nod for total handling performance. I also eliminated the prop cavitations I was getting at full trim by dropping the motor.

Ran tests again for the last four days while musky fishing in Crivitz area. With the motor in the second hole, full gas, two man load, kicker to port, it runs 52 mph pus/minus 1 . I ran a 23 pitch Renegade Bass. Couldn't get on plane, it just spun RPM's out of control. Put on the weed ring and if I was nice it got on plane and ran 5450 RPM, 53.1 mph and it torqued to port at low trim settings. If I put the hammer down it ventillated badly and wouldn't climb up on plane. I tried an aluminum 3 blade 23 pitch with vent holes. Good hole shot, still torqued badly at low trims, and ran 51.6 mph at 5400 RPM. Put the Raker 20 pitch back on, that I ran 5850 at 54 mph with a three man heavy load and it ran 5450 and 52 mph with a horrendous torque at low speeds and low trim. I ran the 23 pitch aluminum by myself and it had a really good hole shot and ran 52.0 mph at 5400 rpm. Go figure! It doesn't make any difference what prop or what RPM's, it tops out around 52 mph with two men in the boat.

From what I can tell you are dead nuts on with your assesment that it needs to be in the top hole. Seems the deeper the prop the better it runs. And unfortunately I am beginning to think I may have to move the kicker to starboard. I am still hoping the Renegade 23 will work but until I change the motor height I'll never know. What a pain fighting through this stuff.

Thanks for the information! I'll show my boat rigger all the info and maybe the next time out I can get this thing running like I expected it to.

A word of warning! I had an accident launching this weekend. The ramp was the kind where there are concrete slabs with gaps between them. I was going to drive the boat off the trailer. My friend backed down to where the winch post was still accessable and unhooked me. He started backing up and the vibrations from the slabs shook the boat loose from the trailer bunks. It went sailing off the trailer before I could do anything and when it had the weight on the last roller, the stern went down and grated the concrete under the water or some rocks at the end of the ramp. Ouch! Just missed the transducer and buggered up the gelcoat on the back of the pad. Not a good feeling. I've never seen a boat come off bunks like that before. Don't know if it would happen again or it was just a freak accident, but next time I'll unhook the winch strap from inside the boat after it is in a little deeper on that type of gentle incline ramp.

You will need to place the kicker on the starboard side.
