Why did Ranger ever quit making the 617VS looks like a pretty kick a$$ boat for people that cannot afford a $50000 620...

Well, from what I learned from Heckel's marina in Eagle River, the salesmen and Ranger rep said that the 617 model didn't sell very well. Heckel's always had one heck of time trying to sell these.

Don't quote me, but I believe 2002 was the last year they were available. I do not believe you'lll find a new one but if you look hard, you might find a like new used one. I've haven't seen a new one since 03' or so.

Look at the Triton 177 if you want a 17' boat. Just bought one after looking at all the glass boats out there, I couldn't be happier! They are right up there with the Rangers and Yarcrafts in my opinion, even a touch nicer. Plenty of room and power in a smaller package.

I love my used 617 I picked up last year. Check out walleyecentral.com and other sites if you are looking. You do see a couple for sale here and there, but not many. In general, if under a 135 on it, it is going to be underpowered for some situations as the boat weighs a solid 1585 pounds. Well worth the wait if you ask me if you want a solid 17 1/2 foot fiberglass boat.

I bought a used 2000 617VS from MW this spring... this is a sweet little boat. I have a 135 opti on it- good enough for 2 people and gear but it does plow thru the water a bit before planing with 3 people. Still goes in the high 40's, maybe breaks 50 if I'm alone. Was initially concerned with the lack of storage, but the lockers they have are big and all of my crap fits in there nicely. Anybody know how big the tank is on these? I have only had it out 4 times and have yet to need to fill it up (my first opti- gotta love these!). Nice looking boat, and a completely different world from my old "ugly white Yar Craft!" Maybe Ranger will re-introduce them... look at the buying trends with cars- people are downsizing due to gas. I needed a boat that I could tow efficiently with my V6 Ford Explorer, and this one fits the bill quite nicely.

My only regret is I wish it was a dual console so my wife would go out with me more (she just loves it when we take a wave wrong and gets wet!)
