Location: Darboy USA | I've been experimenting with different ways to keep my crawlers and how to bring them on the boat and can't find a good way to get them to stay unless I use a smaller igloo cooler with ice on the top of the bedding. This works well, but then I need to have ice all the time and the cooler takes up floor space on the boat.
Fishing with some pros on BDN last week they had ziplock bags with bedding in and they just threw them in the boat coolers. I tried that this weekend on Bago and most of the crawlers died??
I like the bedding as it's less messy in the boat. Anyone have any other suggestions on how to store them while using them for fishing? I'd like to not have to go back to the larger cooler in the boat, but I know that works well. Let me know what you've found works best for you.

| Aaron, Antoher trick to store them in your boat, take your crawlers and put them in a zip lock bag with a couple ice cubes, no bedding and leave them in your drink cooler all day. At the end of the day take them out and return them to your "worm home".
Worm bedding if too wet can kill your crawlers in one day of fishing, better to error on the dry side, can always "rehydrate" them in a ziplock bag of water.
Good Luck. |

| You can try paper thru a paper shredder for bedding and I like the flip tops by frabil and use 3 to 4 on a trip on the lake they will hold up to 50-75 if packed that morning the paper I soak in ice cold water and ring it out. The crawlers love it, and a day or so it it will plump them up like Johnsonvilles, Walleye Expresses idea and I suggest give it a try, The paper does get around but it vacuums up nice when its dry. I would also suggest a 120V or propane fridge for trips if camping and store your main supply there. |

Location: Midland, MI 48642 | At home I keep the crawlers in Fat & Sassy bedding inside the garage refrigerator at 40 degrees. The night before I go fishing I take the required number of crawlers I will need and wash them off and put them in plain white paper I ripped up and soaked in cold water inside a large zip loc bag. I do drain the most of the water out. In the boat I take a small kids lunch cooler and put in a couple of those frozen lunch blue ice blocks about 7 x 4 x 1 and that keeps them cold all day as long as you keep the top closed after you grab a crawler. Crawlers love it and do fatten up nice. I take them home and put back in Frigerator but do not mix them with the ones in bedding. Works great and the floor in the boat and the brim of my hat do not get all black and dirty...... Skeeter

| At home I store the crawlers in containers with bedding and put about 2 doz. per container. That way when you're fishing you can take however many containers you may need. I take a 6 pack size cooler in the boat along with a gallon size freeezer bag filled with ice cubes. Keep this in your large cooler to keep things cold. When I get to my fishing spot I put about 4 inches of water in the small cooler and cover the water surface with ice cubes. Then take the crawlers one at a time from the bedding and drop them in the ice water. Usually 2-3 doz. to start. The water will get somewhat dirty thru the day-depending on what kind of bedding you use-but not a problem. The cold water keeps the crawlers firm for hooking and clean-no mess in the boat. Add crawlers and ice thru the day as needed. At the end of the day put crawlers back in the bedding and take them home. I have never lost crawlers doing this and no mess in the boat. Crawlers stay good and lively. |
