Right now if you are fishing the west side try to target 23-30' of water. Don't be afraid to run things high and low. It might be the easiest if you use 1 ounce weights to figure out the depth that you are running. With a 1 ounce weight figure 2 feet of line out for every 1 foot of depth you are trying to cover. Use your electronics to mark fish and then put your bait at the depth or a little bit higher. Hope this helps. Some days the bite just sucks, or the feeding window is short.

Good luck

You cannot use that method 70 ft back is down 14 feet. get a precision trolling book

Snoopdog,

40 feet back @1.1 mph with a 1 oz inline weight will get you on bottom in 24 feet of water. I don't use the trolling guide for harnesses, I use the "I just got a huge ball of zebra mussels at 40 back in 24 feet of water method".

If I run 35 back with 1 oz weight @ 1.1 mph, I will hit bottom in 20-21 feet of water all day long.

For whatever it's worth!

Snoopdog:

You are both right if it is working for you. The big difference is in your speed. 1.1 to 1.4 can make a big difference with that weight. Now take in the fact that his 1.1 mps may actually be .9 on your electronics and your 1.4mph may actually be 1.6 using his equipment. The variables are too great to argue about. You can say the same thing about line diameter and how much line each of you have on your reels. Again, too many variables to tell each other who is right or wrong. You could even put blade size into the equation if you wanted to be very picky.

Yes, everyone who trolls should get at least one version of Precision Trolling. But remember that it is only a guide and is not 100% accurate for all of us in all conditions. Too many variables.

Yup, not to mention 60 feet of line on Snoops line counter reels and 60 on PS's reels could be 30% different.
The easiest way that I've found is to hold the rod tip at the water line right next to the boat and let out 10 feet or so at a time until you feel the weight contact bottom.
Continue holding the rod and letting a small amount of line out, pause, let more line out, pause, until you know that you are right at the bottom but not dragging it. (this should take a few minutes) The amount of feet out can now be used as a constant for this depth, speed, weight and harness.
So, Lets assume that you have 60 feet of line out to tickle bottom in 24 feet of water at a trolliing speed of 1.3. Then if you let out 40 feet of line you should be down 16 feet, 30 feet of line would get you 12 feet, etc. ussuming your speed remains constant.
You have to experiment with your equipment and electronics to mske this work.

Does the new Trolling Bible have a section for inline keel weights or is it still the 50/50 method that I have in my version of the book?

One of the latest versions, I think the 7th had the Bass Pro Keel weights in it.

The dive curve was for 1oz, 2oz, & 3oz @ 1.5mph.

Bob,

Call me if you can get a day off next week, we'll go hit the bay. If everything goes right, I should be fishing every day next week.

Gave Poygan a shot this morning....1 Walleye, 2 crappies, 2 white bass, 1 Sheaphead.... I should have stayed home and worked!

Just go out there and experiment, it's more rewarding catching fish that YOU figured out how to catch, that is unless you are just a meat hunter looking for a meal' then I guess it doesn't matter

All I'm saying is, go out and try your own thing, you have the boat and the electronics, run different set ups on each side of the boat untill you get something going, the fish out in the mud are here today, gone tomorrow. so, once you find fish stay on them. If you pull a couple of fish from a spot, pick up and go back over them. Chances are you'll catch a few more in the same area. I've spent many hours on the bay scratching my head wondering what I was doing wrong. But, all that scratching has made me a better fisherman. One more thing, not everyone catches 20 to 30 fish every outing, it is quite possible, but it's not going to happen very often.

lil al,

Have you considered hiring a guide? I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but hiring a guide will drastically reduce the learning time. Just think of all the gas, bait, time, etc... that is wasted on your own learning excursions. One day with a guide will teach you more than you could learn in 20 trips on your own. If you do choose to hire a guide on the bay, shop around a bit and ask others about reputable guides. Some guides are great teachers others just want to get fish in the boat. I myself enjoy teaching my customers, showing them how to do every aspect of the fishing techniques used that day.

If you are interested in a trip, check out my website www.captainjollycharters.com. If you aren't interested in joining me for a day of fishing, feel free to shoot me an email with any questions or use the message board on my site for questions.

Good luck!

Captain Brett Jolly
