| I have a '06 Mercury 9.9 4 stroke kicker that is horrible to start when cold but is wonderful once you get it started and it warms up. I'ts elec. start/remote controled and fuel is drawn from the main Lund boat tank. Anyone had similar experience with this engine? Any ideas? Thanks |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | My first question is, Do you know you have a push choke system on the control box for that motor? Do you also know you can break open the throttle slightly when cold starting. That should take care of your problems unless the linkage is whacky. |

| I do know about the choke and I've tried about every throttle position imaginable (out of gear, of course) to get it started. The manual cautions against advancing the "fast idle" to start. Claims it will instantly flood the engine. I've tried it. Doesn't seem to help. |

| I have a 05 8hp 4 stroke kicker on my boat and it is real cold-blooded too. But, just as you said once it warms up it is ok. I even took it back and had a mechanic check it out and there was nothing wrong. Maybe just have to live with it. |

| Before you try and start it, double check the primer bulb. You may have to give it a few squeezes first. I have an older '03 15hp Merc as a kicker on a Lund and if I don't use the kicker for a while, I need to reprime the line. Worth a try. |

| buckhorn, yesterday when I was out, my kicker had not been started for quite some time, maybe a month. I pulled the choke out, primed it with the little primer on the motor, and hit the starter. Well, it fired, but I had to keep pushing in the little primer on the engine to keep it running. Once it kept running I set the idle up on it and just let it run for maybe 2-3 minutes. After all that, it ran perfect.
Before anyone commits, of course I first primed the in-line ball. |

That's what I do, and I don't have any problems getting it started. pump the bulb, push the primer about 5 times or so, pull the choke, and hit the starter. I don't continually crank it. I give it short bursts, and it usually catches on the second one. Then I advance the throttle to raise the RPM's and let it high idle for up to 5 minutes. She'll start everytime after that.

| The '06 that I have has does not have a primer bulb and the choke is activated by pushing in on the key. I had it suggested that the biggest problem might be that it just hasn't been fully broken in so I took it out and putted around for 2.5 hrs. Now, frankly, that was rather boring. I haven't had a chance to run it since then so I can't yet report if it made a difference. I will tell you that it runs beautifully when it runs and is incredibly smooth and quite. When its hot, all you have to do is look at it and it will start………………..well that may be stretching the truth a bit. |

| Remote control kicker. I didn't know they didn't have the primer bulb. Mine would be hard starting without that bulb, and with just the choke. Doubtful that the key choke adds any fuel to the motor like the bulb does. I do think you need to hold the key in while it warms up. |

| I don't know if it's any help but I had a very hard time cold starting my 2004 Merc 150 XR6 until I went and read the owners manual...duh!...make sure the primer bulb is pumped hard and then I believe it says in there to turn the key to the on position and push and hold the key in the primer function for 6 seconds before even turning the engine over with the fast idle advanced slightly(must be some sort of priming loop in the carbs??...made my sob of a cold starting motor into one that isn't to bad to cold start...Randy |
