Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | I will call it today, November 24th, the river is frozen. The snow last eve covered it and there is substantial thickness.
And so it starts, 126 and a wake up to ice out.
Have a lovely winter.

| I say you take a couple chuck roundhouses and plow your way out there to place an official marker!
I'll lay claim to March 24th, and if that don't work I'll call Mr. Norris up and have him breath heavy in your direction that morning!
Good luck

| Hey Kirk, how is it going. I did have a question about trimming to much. Some guy at work told me trimming it up to far is bad because oil doesn't get to the top piston. Denny told me it is not. Whats your take on this? I was gun shy to trim it up just because I was a little nervous on how fast the 1890 went when I did that. It sure made Winnebago smaller with my new boat. Actually pretty cool when a storm rolls in and I'm 10 miles from the landing. Nice to know I have it when I need it. |

FYI, yesterday I was on the river at Fort Fremont just down stream of Fremont and drilled holes. There was 9" on the west side of the river and there is 14" on the snowmobile trail. The water is clear andthere is flow. I made my first drive of spring and as predicted I found alot of snow. If things stay, we will have good water yet again this year.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | OK, The river ice is thick. I went on a drive and found 18" at gills and 14" at northport. 15" in fremont and 20" on the snow mo trail at Fort Fremont. The snow pack in the woods is good everywhere. We could use more for the run off, I think. Either way it should be good. Lets hope we dont get a february thaw. The current is low. We are at the heart of winter my friends. Anyone else feel that stirr in the belly at 230AM and have to get up and watch a 30 min video of open water fishing? Shoot, everyone in my group are reporting such things. I bet the walleyes are feeling it to.
Say, can anyone else feel when its going to be a full moon with out cheating and looking at a calander?

The stretch is small but I expect to see more soon. Sturgeoin is over and I guess there will be at least 1 more fish swimming. Yep, my guide failed me, hehehehe.
Appleton boat show this week, will get out and drill some holes wednesday for the start of my weekly wednesday round up till ice out.

Hahahaha... I'm not tall enough to sit down and see over the bar.
Good to hear there is a little open water. Today's rain and the 4-8 inches of snow we are supposed to get Thursday should help eat a little more of the ice off the river.
Thanks for keeping an eye on the river for us Denny. |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Brads right, no matter how you answer, some one else will have other answers. 1/2 oz is a bit much, I have found I use 3/8th for the most part. 1/4 some times but like to feel bottom. 1/4 will blow around in the current when slipping and go around trees. 1/4 will work anchored, sometimes. 1/8 for dragging.
Colors, keep them basic. orange chartruse green black and plain lead.
Round balls work fine. Use fireline, saves you big money when jigging.
Wednesday, went to newlondon, below northport 1/2 mile 10inches.
Guths, no relief in site.
Gills, shore is dark under the rail road bridge. 15inches and water on top
and its still open in fremont from just below teds to the slipknot.
trucks are driving in the river mouth.
Friends, well local folk up river, say hang on to your shorts, with the rain and the snow they say the water will rise fast in new london when the marshes get fresh water as they are working already and they are ready to fuel the system.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Wow, where the river darkened and showed signs of spring, that old frost mizer has resealed. Just got a call from a friend who said he is climbing the walls. From the cieling I agreed. Newlondon guys tell me the current has picked up and is sustained. Means the marshes are working with the longer sun hours and all. When she starts to popp I bet it will be faster than we all expect.
Mentioning that, the count stands at 28 and a wake up. 4 count them 4 weekends or less.
Got everything ready?

Guths very tight
Gills, snow covered
Fremont opened up closed and reopening. I expect my sunday run to show one heck of alot more.

minnow pales/pails. LOL!! Tell me you did not go out fishing this winter, stop at your local establishment and leave the bucket to freeze in the truck, I have about 17 of them in the drive way today "Unthawing".
River is gray. Fremont has but a trickle open. God its hot out side. Gonna drill holes tuesday. I will let ya know what I find, BUT, after the breaker yesterday my throat was dry, soooooooooo....... I went to Gills to refresh it and talked to my buds and found that there is still 15" up there, however, the waupaca is way up and pushing. I feel we will see some openings and such starting this week. I am off wednesday and plan for depere or poygan, I will find time to drill some hole from northport on down in many locations and let everyone know whats what before the weekend.

The rocks down stream of the new bridge have openings as well. When I just walked down by the river, it was sounding like snap crackle and pop cereal. If this weather stays, there could be spots by saturday, 28th for sure. BUT THE WEATHER HAS TO STAY WARM. OK I am starting to shake a bit.

I can now see the trench that is being carved open from the docks at Fort Fremont. The open trench has extended at least 1 mile so far today. I still will not say open water by saturday, BUT and thats a BIG BUTT, It just might be open enough to fish. Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | OK GUYS here is your wednesday run down.
New london has boats pushed across bad shorelines and guys fishing on 12 inches of ice. Northport is not even opened up below the bridge yet Ice ranges from 9-12" thick.
Guths, Tight
Gills, the Waupaca river is wide open and pushed down stream past the launches and the last seawall however, its about 50ft wide only. The other side is thick yet.
Fremont is 1/2 to 3/4 ice free to gala resort then it thins down till the river is solid across in front of party dolls. I cannot walk on the ice at Fort Fremont any longer.
The rundown for the weekend of 21-22 will be no boating. There is very little open water and if you make waves it could be a mess getting out of the way of sheets of ICE.
Get the boat started, batteries charged, oiled and gassed, we have rain coming in and I spect' it will open the river for the 28th-29th.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Fridays lunch time report.
Fremont is half way open to the rocks, many floating chunks. From rocks up very little open water.
From red banks down quite tight. I am sure most is floating bergs but wedged up. Up stream is very wide with shelf ice. Seems like to long stretches have open water, the turns hold it up. There launch is un useable.
If you decide to go this weekend be CAREFUL. The bergs will follow you down stream. I would suggest a depere trip or a garage weekend. Next week will be much better. It is nearly impassable.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | 9:20 AM March 23rd 2009 ICE OUT!!!
The river is ice free from Gills on down. There are many small chunks around and above the railroad bridge there is alot of ice. This rain should melt alot of it.
BE CAREFUL, WOT runs are not needed and keep your eyes peeled for logs and debris.
The river temp is 32.6 to 33.8 the fish are very lethargic. But there are fish in the river.
PS On sunday morning I was out and it took about 2 mins to get the first one.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | FYI UPDATE, a boat just came in and a sheet of ice has wedged its way across the river near the island. The rain should clear it today, but if you are out wednesday keep your eyes open. |
