Location: Manitowoc, WI | This, once again, reinforces my theory on what "safe ice" is. The truth: there is no such thing as safe ice. Anytime one travels on the ice with their vehicle they do so at their own risk and they should not be covered by insurance. |

| Interesting....Insurance can be purchased for this particular activity and must be discussed with most insurance companies as it isn't cheep, although if it's your profession you can get cheaper rates. I have an iteresting question though..... Do Maritime laws apply to abandoned vehicles on federal waters similar to that of Boats?
Good Luck

Location: Rhinelander | I don't drive anything on the Great Lakes during ice season, though I might walkout a ways if the fishing is really good. Too easy to get lost in the fog I live in all the time if I can't see any landmarks, and this sort of thing can happen. |

Location: Elgin, Illinois | I have a friend who lives in Michigan who ice fishes quite a bit... He uses a very, very old but reliable snow machine... He paid like $400 and had it worked over for another 3 or 400. And, he caries not one but two GPS units and a portable marine radio and a full sized one on the snow machine. Sounds like some very sensible behavior to the problem. He has discussed a small two man rubber boat to haul in the trailer...
There really are no "old fools"... Old men are usually not fools and fools usually don't make it to "old man" stage. |

Location: Neenah, WI | Yes, you are responsible for your vehicle if it goes through the ice on the Bay. There was a Warden on the news on Ch.11 this morning and he mentioned it. With that deep water it would be a pretty high dollar proposition. |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | This has been happening for 45 years or better on all the bays to the great lakes. I cannot vouch for any longer than that, but my elders might. I guess the worst part if you were them guys is being seen on CNN. Yep, it made national news today. I just laughed. |
