Subject: tip up set-ups

Hello, I am mainly an open water fisherman but have killed some winter days by pulling panfish thruogh the ice. I am thinking about stepping it up to walleye and would like some pointers on rigging tip-ups. line? hooks? weights? depths in water column? hook sets? and anything you think a new guy should know.
I am thinking of going to Bay de Noc in feb. and wanted to see if anyone knows any tips for that water on the ice?
Thanks for any help you can provide!!!

Bob,

I can help you out with how I rig my tip-ups but I don't have anything for you on ice fishing Bay De Noc.

I use Beaver Dams and the round Polar tip-ups.
I use either 12 or 15# greenbar or sometimes Dacron as the main line with a 5' length of 6-8# mono. I use a number 10 or 12 treble hook with only a couple of bb split shot. I hook the minnow behind the dorsal fin. I use a button as a depth marker and target the eyes a foot off the bottom with tip ups and will jig another hole for the suspended ones. When you hook set all you need to do is give them time and set it with a wrist jerk, anymore and their gone. Don't worry about the hook being way down their gullet because 99% of the time they will be hooked right in the upper lip. You can use bigger bait and hooks in the bay but the lakes I fish this is the ticket for fish in the 20-24" range.

Good luck and be safe!

My set up is similar to the above post. I like to use flouro as leader material. I usually use 8# test on my tip ups. Very abrasion resistant and nearly invisible in the clear water. I also like to put a colored, rattling bead above the treble as an added attracter. You may want to throw a jigging rod in the bucket if you are heading to the bays de noc and a selection of jigging raps #5 and #7 along with some swedish pimples.
Two good websites: http://sallmarresort.com and http://baydenoc.com/bayviewsports/ for good bay de noc fishing information

I use 20# flouro leader tied to 50 pound superline. The walleyes don't seem to mind the setup at all, and the Pike don't cut the leader.

Frabill tip ups.

I have not been on the ice in years, but I used the same set up as Steve.
