Saugers open on Bago?

There has been much discussion at another WI site claiming that you can now harvest 1 sauger per day on Bago in addtion to 5 walleyes. I didn't give it any credence until I saw Paul Williams (aka Coot) post over there. Interesting news. I am going to call the DNR Monday to confirm.

I've got a call in to George Progere on this very subject. When he calls me back I'll post here. I hope it isn't a fact. I would like to see the Sauger make a bigger comeback before we start keeping them.

George Progere (I hope I spelled his name correctly) called me back yesterday afternoon. You can keep 1 Sauger IN ADDITION to your 5 Walleye daily bag limit. This is due to the regulation being worded wrongly. They hope to have the regulation worded correctly by Spring to only having 4 Walleyes and 1 Sauger for your daily bag.

I would like to relay the info I got from the Oshkosh DNR office.

It is really just a confirmation of what Dale reported.

I was curious as to why there wasn't some kind of press release and why the new rule went into affect before the current license expired.

What the person who answered the phone told me, even before I mentioned sauger (apparently they have been getting a lot of calls) is this: the regulation was written several irregularities. It went into affect 12-01-08(it should have coincided with your fishing license expiring). In addition the bag limit irregularity that Dale talked about.

The whole thing seems a year or two early. I do have a call into Kendal. I'd just like to get his input.

I didn't ask about a size limit but if there is I think he would have mentioned it. I don't intend to keep any and I wish they would leave them alone for a few more years.

I did ask about the size limit. It's the same as walleye - none.

Just renewed my license and saw that they didn't change the bag limit to 5 including one sauger. It is still 5 walleyes and one sauger (p. 70).

Kendall confirmed this at his presentation at FOCAS a few weeks ago. He said the mistake in the bag limit - 5 walleye AND 1 sauger - will be in effect this year, but will change for next year. He also said he doubts many tournaments will adopt this change.

Most guys will not keep saugers anyway, but there are always some that will.

The problems with Legislaturers go on and on, wait to you hear about the mess with the catfish regs!
Go to the spring hearings and participate. You CAN be heard, unfortunately it has to fall on deaf ears some times but it is an outstanding process that EVERYONE should be involved with, I am often ashamed at the low turnout.

Good Luck

I like the taste of saugers better than walleye or perck. I'll be keeping every one I catch. Will have to start fishing the ond sauger spots again.

Hey Hungry dude,
I heard that eating too many saugers affects your ability to spell and type.
Could that be true?

So many walleyes in the system i find no need to keep a sauger but if some one wants to keep that one sauger its legal so WHY NOT. I got a hunch many poeple dont know the difference and have been keeping them anyways the past few years!

Yes, that is correct, keeping one is legal, nobody said it wasn't.
Ground swatting ducks and shooting turkeys out of the tree is legal too...
To each his own.

Thanks Rich, (by the way, you mispelled 'to')

"Ground swatting ducks and shooting turkeys out of the tree is legal too..."

Is it OK for me to ground swat a deer if I'm in a tree? Would it be more OK for me to swat a duck if I were swimming or shoot the turkey out of the tree as long as I climbed into it first? What about shooting fish in a barrel? Is that wrong too?

I feel so dirty...
