I am just wondering if you were in a tournament but it had to be cancelled due to extreme weather the day of the event, how would you like the director to handle it.

Now, I personally don't think we should get 100% of our money back since most tournaments only have an 80% payback to cover their expenses. Let me know if you disagree with that.

Please also give me your opinion on re-scheduling the event. This would be the last thing I would want personally but I am curious to get all your opinions.

Please select or add an option and give reasons why you chose your selection.

Thanks all!

The only way the tournament fisherman possibly earns anything is by a good finish. That too should be the same for the tournament director/organizer. I don't think they should earn anything unless a tournament took place. If it's cancelled then all the money should be returned.

As for rescheduling, it should be done at the earliest weekend, without consideration to who it might be most convenient for.

Just reschedule it and you wouldn't have to refund any money. And like jerry says, do it at the earliest time without regard.

You pays your money, you takes your chances. That's what I always say.

I think you need to fish to get paid. Therefore I don't think a random drawing would work.

I also don't think a 80% payback works because again, you didn't fish.

The option most likely to work would be 100% towards future tournaments either yet in the currant year or the next year.

Tough call to make. I would think people would accept whatever you choose as long as it was covered on the entry forms and mentioned at the pre-tourny meetings. People accept weather as being a concern, what they don't accept is a last minute change in how things operate with their money.

Be straight forward and things should be OK.

I say draw for the cash for the amounts listed as pay backs. The guy running the event had expenses. The only thing he did not do that was expected of him was weigh your fish. At that point all the cash had been spent on his part. Make him take it out of pocket and he will not have an event again. 100% is not realistic. You can puff up your chest all you want, most tourneys are weekend warriors who will not be able to make it a different weekend. If you payed 50.00 or 200.00 its the same. If you payed 800.00 or 1500.00 that diff.

I WOUD FAVOR A RE-SCHEDULING BUT IT MIGHT NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR THE TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS BECAUSE OF TOURNAMENT PERMIT ISSUES.

Oh, yeah. The permit thing will make it harder in the future. Not a big deal now in WI, at least. Resubmit at the soonest possible time, and it gets approved pretty fast.

Ok, I love the responses and please keep them coming. This is NOT what I expected to see for results. What happens to the money of those that do not fish the re-scheduled event? Keep it in the pot or have the organizers keep it to help offset the money they lost from the cancelled event?

That's why I like tournaments on a Saturday and then use Sunday for a blow or bad weather day. Easier to get permits that way, the contestants are already off and they are still in contact with their fish from pre-fishing. When you schedule it later you have more pre-fishing because the fish may have moved.

In the event you have bad weather the next day then all money needs to go back to the contestants. If you can make it out the next day and they don't want to fish Sunday then they forfeit all of their entry money.

At first glance I like the 100% credit for a future tournament, but given the chance that the organization may exist in the future, well that might not work. Since everyone is there when the tournament is called, pick the names out of hat and call it a raffle. I can remember that is what was done at a WMT(musky) tournament when no legal fish were caught at LVD one year. It was stated that way in the rules an nobody had a problem with it...To reschedule in the future, well now there are xtra costs added, motel, gas etc. Just get it over with the cleanest way possible and move on....

On the big waters of Lake Erie Tourney directors have no choice but to cancell tourney's and the ones that are get rescheduled for the following day if it's a saturday tourney if not usually the next weekend. If the tourney director doesn't cancel the coast guard can step in and say it's a no go under small craft.
