Location: Lake Erie | Everything has gone up. I checked out the new BPS catalog and about fell over when I saw the 2009 prices on some items. For example, Diawa Tiara I paid 114 last year it's 124 this year. I went to BPS in Rothford OH, they wanted 39.99 for an Offshore board and OR-18 Releases were priced at 16.99!!, the local shops around Erie sell those for 10.99-12.99.
Gander Mountain did have a TON of Rapalas on sale here in Ohio, got them for 20% off so 4.80 a piece, I have seen them for almost 7.00 or better at a few places...signs of the times I guess. |

It always amazes me how they blame the increase in cost on gas but then once gas goes down the price stays the same. I understand there is a delay but when is the last time you saw the price go down?? |

Location: Menasha, WI | An oldie but a goodie... I can't decide if I want to re-invest or buy some cranks.
After this weeks stock market … here are some 401k retirement investments compared:
-
If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. -
With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1000. -
With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left. -
If you had purchased $1000.00 of Delta Airlines stock you would have $49.00 left. -
If you had purchased United Airlines, you would have nothing left.
But ... if you had purchased $1000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for recycling, you would have $214!!!!
Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle!!!!!!!!!
This is called the 401-Keg Plan.

| Yes!!! I just paid my business taxes and realized that the only place this economy is going to grow is if you get a job in his administration. I'm selling everything I own to try and survive the next 4 years. Yes I think it's going to get that bad. |

| Please old wise one redneck enlighten (tongue-in-cheek) us underlings on the robust areas of the economy. I have 300+ businesses as clients across the Midwest and every one of them is facing dire conditions. These were successful businesses that have been around for more than 25 years, owner operated medium to small operations with 100-450 employees. Every one of the owners has spent untold time and effort to build their business and each of them knows their way around the business community. They are frightened beyond belief, depressed and working their tails off every day to survive. All have suffered through layoffs of good employees, many of which had been there more than 15 years. I’ve worked with these people facing layoffs and they are devastated!!
There will always be a need to provide the essentials, but the real question is, will there be anyone left after the next 4 years of this administration that will have any money left to pay for it. I agree with Sunshine, businesses in many industries including the recreation industry are going to close their doors in the next 4 years. I started to liquidate all my toys and non-essential items a year ago and I sold all my investments for cash. I'm just hoping I have enough cash to support my family for the next 4 years. Talk to anyone in business, they are worried sick right now. I’m sure the 75 employees that just got their notice at Sportsman’s in DePere would appreciate your wisdom.

| Look, my wife and I have both lost our jobs...she lost hers 6 months ago and has had very little luck finding new work and I was laid off 3 months ago from my full time job. I went back and opened my old business and have been doing fine...I'm not going to get rich but we are able to keep up on all bills. Moose Lake has been taken up by 15 new clients since Jan. 1st and is growing at a fast rate.
Art and entertainment (at least from my view) has not been hit as hard. Government jobs will be fine for obvious reasons.
Are businesses closing...yes, are entire industries disappearing...no. What I did was take my skill and offer that to a complete industry, not a company, at a low rate and let eight companies co-op my services for a rate that saves them money.

Lucky we all didn't take you up on that job offer a few months ago!
Seriously though. That sucks! I feel for you. I'm watching about half the people I know around here losing their houses and everything, like slowly bleeding to death. Bad part is in Michigan, there's no jobs to replace what they lost, no matter how motivated. I saw on TV that something like 3400 people applied for 7 positions at some place. Unless you do have a skill you can market as a side business, you're screwed! I've got the tackle biz already, but I'm about to be in your same boat. I work for a NON-UNION auto supplier and about to take a second pay cut and drop to 4 day weeks, totaling 26% pay reduction since Jan.1, not to mention the benefit cuts. It will be a miracle if I still have a job by June! I'm getting ready to start a third job, on the weekends, stuffing money away for when it happens. Wife is detailing cars part time also, anticipating what's to come. And the reason for the "Recession Special". Hang in there and work your butt off. Those that do in this crap will come out like roses in the long run! |

| The good news is I'm on a temporary lay-off. I expect to be back at work in one or two months. My employer is allowing my family to stay on their health plan without going to COBRA (for now) and they had me keep my key pass and cell phone. The lay-off not only caught me off guard but my boss was surprised also. One does have to think outside of the box to keep ahead in this economy. There are ways to make money...just have to be creative. |

Can't we just have a serious discussion about the economy here? Geez...you guys and your constant joking around. If I wanted fun and enjoyment, I'd hang out with my wife. I come here for meaty, thought provoking discussion, and this is what I get?
Here's my serious take on unemployment: Shoving borrowed money into the market will not fix the problem. The market needs to correct itself, and it will be a terrible, terrible time while it does, but it will, and throwing money at the problem will only delay the inevitable. The stimulus package is a very, very expensive band-aid. You still see wasteful spending from government and large private corporations. We are not learning. |

And it wasn't the last one either! How about putting the blame where it really belongs. On a do nothing, spend like there's no tomorrow congress, a couple years of outragious gas prices while the oil companies are making record profits every quarter, and Fannie May Freddie Mac/subprime fiasco that the previous administraion warned Congress to straighten out many years ago!
History is on my side here, and is repeating itself. In the 70's, the oil companies were all for tightening emission regulation on the autmotives, knowing full well that it would result in a severe reduction in fuel mileage. Then when the added demand went up, they created the fuel shortage, with the help of Jimmy Carter and the embargo. What happened? People stopped buying Detroit Iron, and the automotives were hurting. Everybody blamed the automotives for not being in touch with reality, and technology. Chrysler got the Govt loan(bail out), retooled, and came back pretty good. The other three saw some hard times, but eventually recovered.
We will recover from this one too. It'll just take some time. More than the last one. Think what you will, but corproate greed in not a concept born in the last 8 years.
I am sorry to see all the jobs lost. Hopefully, better times are coming sooner than later. |

| Guest, believe me, I LOVE to debate. Only thing is, I like to debate things that can be proven. I can prove that your boat is faster than mine. No one can prove that McCain would be doing a better job than Obama is, no one can prove who's fault this mortgage crisis is, and no one can prove that the same thing wouldn't have happened if a Democrat was in the White House the last 8 years. Can't be done, so why argue?
I say let's argue about things that can be proven like: Which way does the Earth spin- CW or CCW? Does muskie taste better deep fried or baked? And most importantly- could Stacker actually be Rush Limbaugh?
answers:
both
deep fried, of course
I bet you've never seen them both together at the same time... I think it's pretty obvious.
Last thought: Could we (OK, me) possibly have taken this thread any further from the price of crankbaits? I apologize. |

Seriously though. I'm no Obama fan, but my god, the guys been in office for what, 53 days??? Come on. You guys defended Bush 3 years+ into his term for the economic problems, blaming on Clinton policies from 3 years ago!!!, BUT 53 days into Obama's term, it's all his fault, even though he inheritied a recession already full-blown from Bush!???
Suck up it up, look at reality for what it is, and try being true Americans for once, and wish the best for the guy, regardless of party, because all of our butts are on the line!! If he FAILS, we fail. |

| The reality is America has a communist nation (China) warning the Obama administration not to be doing what it appears they are doing. We have China telling us to be more capitalist. I personally do not want the country going in the direction it seems to be heading but I'm just hanging on for dear life until the ride is over. |

| I don't consider the dollar deflating towards the value of the yen a move forward for us. China holds most of our debt and expects a good return on that money, if that return is worth a lot less than they expect it screws us more than it screws China. |

| What's up, Barack? At least wait a bit until your campaign promises aren't so fresh in my mind before you betray me...I thought you were different?
WASHINGTON, March 15 (UPI) -- The Obama administration may support a move to tax employee health benefits as a way to finance an overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system, sources say.
Support for the idea would represent a turnabout for President Barack Obama, who last year criticized Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona when he floated a similar idea, calling it "the largest middle-class tax increase in history," The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported Sunday. BTW, what they mean by "finance an overhaul" is taxing those with healthcare benefits to pay for those without.
