Location: albany NY | I am new to trolling for walleyes with a rigger and need to know how slow i need to be trolling. I am used to trolling for trout and salmon (2.5 to 3 mph) I am fishing a large lake ,man made ,flooded over the original river bed . Most of the walleyes are being caught at the edge of the original river bank by trolling with downriggers while fish are suspended just off the original river. Thanks for any help Craig |

| Not a trolling expert, but I've caught walleye trolling as slow as 0.5 mph and up to 3 mph. Big blades real slow is something I personally like to try, even long lining them using my bow mount to work a breakline. ON Lake Poygan I usually start pulling small crank baits at about 1.5 and work up to just over 2 mph until I find a preferred speed. I have also done well out there pulling lil cleo's at 3 mph.
How deep is the river bed?? Lead core line, snap weights or bottom bouncers might be good options. Lots of different setups for trolling. |

Location: Niagara Falls New York | I`m not an expert on trolling but have done about 20 years of it. I feel it depends on the bait your trolling. stick baits all have an optimum speed that they work best at try looking at your stick next to the boat out of the propwash, pull it faster and slow it down, what looks the best to you. Try to match that speed with your motor. Worm Harnesses are the same way, small blades , big blades , colorado, willow, wide willow they all work best at different speeds. The best advice I could give you is to duplicate what worked the last time you caught a fish. Here in the eastern basin of Lake Erie I like 1.9 to 2.2 the best. Good Luck and let me know how ya do. |

| John, I have to agree with you, I have been fishing Winnebago for over 20 years although my trolling knowledge was limited to salmon fishing until 5 years ago or so! The speed and presentation varys week to week and now on Winnebago is when we seperate the men from the boys, Chase sends a big thank you and he will load op the boards for bottom fishing this weekend with those hot new baits you use on Erie! If your coming this way let me know and maybe we can hook up!
