I have a 9.9 Mariner. This spring I had some work done to it. They said the carb was full of something and even had to drill out the gas holes, replaced the filters etc. The problem was that while trolling after a half hr or less it would just die. While running I would turn my trollmaster up slow and it would die. I got it back and yes it does run really well at very slow speeds. But when I try to turn my troll master up fast to tease a bite it dies. So I have been trolling slow without doing that. Now I have noticed that after trolling awhile it dies. I go back and find the bulb soft. I pump it up hard and it does the same thing after awhile. I went ahead and just purchased a New Mercury hose, bulb and the part that connects to the motor thinking maybe it was a check valve or something to do with that part. Well it did the same thing yesterday. The bulb does NOT collapse it just seems to run out of gas. Any ideas?

Nels - A couple of years ago, a Buddy had the same problem with His 9.9 Merc. Ended up, it was a sticky float in the carb. He removed the float and found there was a burr left from the molding process and with some carefull scraping to remove the burr did the trick. Hope this helps - Bob.

Nels could be 2 things when it starts dying then you should squeeze the bulb and if it picks right up i would suspect the fuel pump but they put a kit in qnd it is part of the carb. the next thing i would look at if its a 2 stroke is the exhaust tube may be plugged from carbon from slow trolling and after a period of time pressure builds up and feeds back killing the motor if you want to talk about it more feel free to call jim 920-418-5477

Nels I still suspect the fuel pump also can still be the carb being dirty. Does it run better with the choke part of the way out if so I weould suspect the carb yet

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Received pump this morning. Put pump on and took it to the launch. Ran perfect for 45 min in gear at higher rpm than idle. Works perfect. KNOCK ON WOOD! Like to thank everyone that showed an interest in the problem. I hope all the informantion in this thread helps someone else someday. Skeeter

ethenol is eating up the fuel pumps in the smaller motors. try finding a gas station that does not have the ethanol additive or go to a fleet farm and get a additive that reverses the affect of ethanol.
