Just finished a phone conversation with a friend from New York, and he reported that the overturned boat was not towed to shore by Sheldon Miedinger, but rather, that he rescued the 2 contestants aboard.
The stranded boaters were floating a full 90 minutes before Sheldon happened upon them and the only reason Sheldon was still on the water is he did not hear the call to return. In my mind, the odds of this meeting would be hard to calculate, specially during the turmoil of such high waves and windy weather. It was a miracle...
My friend also went on to tell of the amateur partner's exhausted state and that it took all 3 of the other men to haul him into the Sheldon's boat. Then after being admitted to the local hospital, they measured this amateur contestant's body core temparature at 92 degrees. Who knows how long he could have lasted in this state and thank God for Sheldon!
It also has been reported that the boat has been recovered as it was found off the coast of Buffalo New York.

Dwight Niemi of Woodbury Minn, and his amateur partner was John Collopy of Ashville New York.
Niemi had also won the biggest fish of the tournament prize caught on day 1. |

| Thank God both are OK, I sure wouldn't have wanted to have been in that water for 90 minutes. I know I need to show some descretion when giving my opinion about the decision to fish that day........

Just a couple thoughts.
1st, Thankfully all made it and no one was seriuosly hurt.
2nd, If I am ever in a situation, I sure hope Sheldon is near!
3rd, Pink and Orange Boat??? What is he driving??? LOL!
4th, The Coast Guard turned tail and went in? For real? What did they radio and say, "Sorry Charlie, it is rough out there!"
I know there is probably more to the story, but when it sounds like the people who are supposed to save you wont, yousa in deep doo doo! If this is the case, the Coast Guard needs to heed the words of Chief Brody in jaws, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." |

Happens more than you might think. The coast guard folks are trained to know what they can handle and what they can not.
For me, the bigger lesson to learn here is to ALWAYS have your marine band on when fishing big water. There was really no excuse for these two boats not hearing the call to get back to the harbor. |

| Very good point Brad, bet they won't make the mistake again...
And Zach, I have very much enjoyed many of the articles on the News Trawler. Since I haven't seen this on any other walleye website, am wondering who came up with this idea and how much work it took to make it happen?
Also want to know how one can submit an article to be considered "News Trawler Worthy"? |

Yea I know, but it would seem to me they should get a bigger boat to use. They have self righting life boats in their fleet all over the saltwater coast, and those are much bigger waves.
And I know they could have, or may have scrambled a chopper, but it just sounds bad to be out in seas that the coast guard wont go in! |
