Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Ok guys, this morning I found 1/2 the Wolf river in Fremont covered in shell ice. Our launch is frozen in and the current is next to zero. The water temp is 32.8 at the docks. With the weather the next few days, I don't see any reason why she won't be tight by wednesday. So even though a boat could launch and get in the river for a few more hours, for safety sake, I am starting the ice out countdown.
Ice up, December 7th, 2009.
115 Days including today and a WAKE UP to april 1st 2010.
Have a lovely winter.

The ice on the river is pretty even at 7-8 inches all the way from newlondon to fremont and out. I am sure with the cold weather on us, it will get thicker. I can tell you that the river came up with these last rains we had and it also muddied the waters out in poygan. |

Here is your ice thickness report. Just out side the docks at Fort Fremont Marine in the deepest section of the river where it opens first there is 7.5 inches of ice. Yep, thats it. Last year there was 14. Middle of the river just off the snowmobile path, 8.5 inches, last year 14 and to the west the thickest it was, 9.5 inches thick. Lastt year we had over 16inches in the same area.
I dont know what that means but I can tell you she will not be making any more over the next 10 days.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | The recent thaw has put some stress on the allready thin ice on the wolf. The streams dumped alot of water that melted the river ice. Fremont was sporting flowing open water 2 days ago. It will tighten back up. However, it is not really thick ice like last year.
The count stands at 64 and a wake up.
Dont forget the Ice Breaker event being held in Fremont at the Fremont Events center which is inside channel cats right at the bridge. If you have been to one in the past, you will not want to miss this one, it will be the best ever. The venue will be 2nd to no one.

55 and a wake up, I cannot drive day.
Guys, dont know what this means but maybe everyone can chime in. I have some open water where ducks stay all winter. There we 70 yesterday there, usually are 8-12.
Then we spotted, and stopped and spotted with glasses, 6, count them 6 sand hill cranes feeding in a field. Have NEVER seen them here this early. |

25 inches on poygan 9 on the river. I think it also will be gone before april 1st, I will say 27th of march.
We need more snow up north guys. The river needs water to keep the gold from going to far upstream. You know where they go when the come up and there is no current slowing them down. Lets keep our fingers crossed that we can keep them down here in the first 40 miles of river. It takes to long when the go 70 miles for them to get back.
Sturgeon this weekend. everyone be safe.

woohoo Vikings gonna hold my feet to the fire on this one. Like I have anything to do with exactly when the melt goes on. Glad to know you have the faith in me hahaha. J/K
I know I would not schedule a vacation for that week though. More than likely be iced in than not.
Fremont has open water and the channel is getting black all the way past the rocks downstream of the new bridge. Lets all pile into Channel cats in Fremont for the ice breaker and see if we can get loud enough to make it move on the 12-13-14th.

| I fished the Wolf 3/21 last year, there was also dangerous ice jams that weekend. I suspect I'll be out a little earlier this year. Early river fishing can be dangerous, I can't stress that enough, be safe everyone.

I see you got a "promotion" over the winter. I know it takes some time and effort - congrats.
About a month ago, on Ground Hogs day, I called March 20th. But I can't take credit for it, Jimmy in Sun Prairie did call for an early spring. I heard he's 80% accurate.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | OK Here is the scoop from wednesdays tour.
NewLondon, Ice fishing is happening on over 6 inches of ice and below the northport bridge is only open 50 feet.. 10 Inches securely in place 1 mile down from the northport bridge.
Guths resort. no open water at all. holes drilled, 8 inches. 5 good and 3 bad.
Gills landing, waupaca river pushed 15 yards out into the river. If we get some run off so it can rise it will open things faster. 8 inches at the boat launch 4 and 4 on the good and bad, nothing looks ugly yet.
fremont, channel cats docks, you could fish off there docks. open for about 10 yards wide with many little flows of ice in it. The bayou 2 ft of ice. UNDER THE NEW BRIDGE, would not walk on it so cannot tell but it aint open either. black on 10 yard wide channel to the rock wall.
chicos, tight, sleds still running, cars have stopped.
poygan, entrys onto the ice have become soft, matter of a few days and 4 wheelers only will be on there no trucks. 20 plus inches still on the lake.
Looks like the weekend rain has pushed back a little. 24 and a wake up. 24 and a wake up.
CAUTION PLEASE, even though it has been said on here that there are guys who have been on the river very early, they also stated that there were ice jams and dangerous ones at that. One spill in the water and you are toast. If you are not a regular to risking your life, and dont really care whether you live or die, wait till I call the ice out date. I make the call when all the big burgs have stopped. You will miss no fish because they come after the water has warmed a bit, and at least you will have half a chance at survival.
If you are at the NEW sport fishing show this weekend at the brown county areana, come see the Tuffys at Fort Fremonts booth and also, I have the coolest new deer stand in the world, check it out.
ICE BREAKER 5, March 12-13-14, channel cats, fremont wisconsin. Go to www.wolfrivercountry.com and watch for the updated speakers list and list of events.
Next scheduled drive by, wednesday march, 10th. |

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | OK 20 days and a wake up to april 1, WILL IT TAKE THAT LONG?
Here is what I seen. Lets start in newlondon, the water is on the rise. It has swelled over the ice on the edges and there are strips that are broken and open, then there are areas that some guys are ice fishing yet.
Moving down the river a guy will find many many miles of shore to shore ice, Then you get to Guths.
The bend at guths is working but not open. we need more water and the rain should help.
Gills landing, there is a 15 yard wide slot open and drifting ice coming through it from the waupaca till around the bend. ABOVE the waupaca and as far as the eye can see it is one sheet of ice up river. The open slot goes to the last cabins and stops. Lots of fog makes it hard to see but looks like it may have dug a path at the green cabin.
Redbanks, seen open water and lots of solid ice yet.
Fremont has a 30 yard wide stretch open, the good side of the river is all frozen. There is constant ice breaking off and coming down. You can see open water around the rocks about 15 yard wide.
Here at Fort Fremont it is side to side ice, it is black but it is there.
I was in a boat wednesday just to see what it is like. 33.1 degree water, zero current or close to it, and the ice thats there is getting weak.
It will be till the sun comes out now before anything happens. Hope for rain as we will need the water.
Denny

She is letting go but it tells me one thing, there will be sheets of ice that are broke off by people that will be coming down the river this weekend. BE CAREFUL if you go out there. The river is on the rise and is no place for rookies this weekend. Its early and the rivers really cold. Be safe grasshopper. 19 days and a wake up to april 1st.

| The ice breaker event is now over and it did its job. sunday showed the river from gills to orihula quite open and lots and lots of bvergs and stumps and marsh and trees and everything coming down, I am not calling ice out yet simply because its still intact up stream from gills and it dangerous to be on the water right now. HOWEVER, this week will be the end so it looks like vikings vacation is protected hahahaha
I will make it official some day this week. here we goooooooooo
I would like to thank each and every person who visited the ice breaker thisweekend, a good time was had by all.

Location: Fremont, Wisconsin | Hi All zero days and a wake up. thats it, March 15th.
I am calling it ice out in Fremont. Fact is from gills down to nearly he mouth is wide open with not hardly any shelf ice at all. Up from gills there is ice but it is weak, it is black and it is hot out. I think it will sink.
IF you go on the river keep your eyes peeled for debris, ice chunks and if the sheets come down. Have a knife ready to cut anchor lines. Heads up all.
Looks like the ICE BREAKER 5 Event in Fremont completed the job.
Have a great spring;)
