Optimax=reliability and the most dependable motor on the market, E-tec, well, you can make your own decision. I know what I'd get!

I have owned and run both and will be running Mercury`s again this season and many more to come. My E-tec did run flawless for the season I had it.With that being said I still believe in the long run your Optimax will be a far more economical dependable value for you to run.

I also had went thru a decision process on hopefully the new Tuffy 1890 I will be ordering, I could go either way but I chose to stay with my OPTI, it has been an awsome running engine with no issues. Cant knock the Etec, I would also look at dealer support as a factor, a bad dealer can ruin a good engine a hurry. My 200 does great on fuel and oil, it all depends on how hard you run it.

I had a Evenrude 115 that i used for 10 years and never had a single problem with it . When i bought my new rig i decided on mercury and optimax because of all the fishermen and charter guys i talked with on Erie .They all had nothing but good things to say . They were right the motor runs great and has lots of power and is so feul efficient its almost hard to believe . The optimax i purchased is the 115 and i love it! So much i bought the 9.9 pro kicker . My best friend is a boat dealer and took 2 optimax 225s on trade this year with 1400hrs on them and the guy re powered with 2 brand new optis. Hope this helps GO OPTI DONT WORRY!

Well I'll chime in here... I currently have a tuffy 1760 with 150 Opti that I bought from the classifieds here... everything has been good and I found good service nearby... my previous boat had a 225 etc HO on it... when working was the most amazing thing out there... when not... it was a giant headache... problem... bought it 1000 miles away... service for it in upstate ny was nonexistant... blowed up twice, 2 lower units and a broken mid section... all happened when I needed it... lost much fishing time and vacation because of it... now that sounds bad... but the problem was the service... if I had bought it down the road things would have been fixed in a timely manner...
ETEC and Opti are the best out there... look at service first before you choose... good luck in your choice...

I have an E-tec 150 on my Ranger 1860 Angler and I love it. Quite, good fuel economy. It'll push my boat in the low mid 40's.

150 Opti will push that 1860 48-50 GPS. And get better fuel and oil economy. Sounds better, too. Add to that, it's bulletproof.

I think he means the Optimax is about as bulletproof as a motor can get these days!

Pretty sure most people knew what I meant when I said bulletproof, including Ritch.

I have run Merc the last fifteen years, and it has done right by me. I am looking this year at the 115hp. The Opti is a 3 cyl. and the E-tec is a 4 cyl. It seems to me the E-tec would be a smoother running machine. Any thoughts?

I have a 115 opti on my 18ft pro v and love it. It was VERY difficult for me to change brands with a friend who sells yamaha and a previous owner of evinrude. However the opti has ran perfectly and is very smooth and feul efficient . Alot of the charter guys on Erie run Merc and talking with them helped me make my decision . Feeding their family depends on it.

I know that Mercury is up there and there is a following. I have heard of coils going bad in them? I have a choice of yamaha 4 stroke or merc. opti. Do not mean to change subject but what do you think about those 2 engines? Thanks Steve

Opti will out perform the Yamaha 4 stroke if they are the same HP class. Yamaha will be quieter at idle.

The 2 stroke DFI's are great motors. I've had them since 2001, and have never had a problem. Great on gas, easy on oil, no smoke, or fumes, great performance all around.
