Subject: Help in selecting a used Ranger boat

I'm looking to purchase a used Ranger boat and have a few questions to anyone who might be of help. I'm interested in the 620vs model with most extras already added (kicker, good electronics, rod holders, etc.). From the ads I've seen 1999-2005 models are in my ballpark price range. Out of those years is there any particular one to avoid, or were most year classes comparable as far as specs and layout goes?...Also, I've seen a few Ranger 692 models out there and was wondering how they compare to the 620?...I'm mostly interested in trolling bigger lakes such as Green Bay and Winnebago.
Thanks for any advice.

At some point, the gas tank in the 620's was moved to the rear. Maybe in 01? I don't remember for sure. But I would go with a year after they moved it. Other than that, not much difference in them. Hulls are all the same through 05. )6 they came out with the new hull.

The 690/692 is a great boat. I like the layout of the 690 the best. Will handle Green Bay just fine. I know several guys that have them, and they fish walleye tourneys on GB. The 690/692 will handle just about anything a 620 will. And they won't take water over the bow when sitting in 2 footers.

In addition to Shep's comments, you might want to be a little leary of the 2000-2002 OptiMax engines. At least get a history from Merc on the engine to make sure that they have had all of the updates done to them.

I have a 99 620vs with the gas tank in the front and absolutely love it. It's keel cuts the waves great and handles green bay and bago well. I agree to do your research on the 2000 to 2003 opti. They had some issues for a while.

Actually, it was the 2000-2001 Opti's. They had them pretty much figured out in 2002 and beyond.

Not saying the pre gas tank move boats are bad, but I know of most guys that had both prefer the later boats. Seems they speared fewer waves.

I agree with shep on the opti's. I have a 99 225 on my 620 and it runs great. They are great engines and I would recommend one to anybody just put the leg work in to make sure it is in tip top running shape.

Thanks again for the info. I can see spring fever is upon us as I've called on a couple 620's, and both have been sold....
Sweet boat Mike, but a little out of my price range...

I have a 99 692 and fish the bay and bago. The 619 replaced the 692 in 2000, but I guess you could still get a 692 in 2000. The hull of the 692 is 18' 9", so the biggest difference between the 692 and the 620 is about a foot of hull and more storage.

The big change for the 620 came in 06. The hull got about 6 inches longer but became "pointier". Not sure how to describe it technically but I think it relates to the dead head. The way I would describe it is there is less hull under the bow so when the boate comes off a wave it dips more cause water to come over the bow. It happens in my 692 too. Rangers just sit closer to the water.

If you have more questions let me know.

they redesigned in 08 with the deeper keel, just like the new 621s....
