Location: Stevens Point, WI | I've got a bunch of new reels and rods and I'm trying to figure out what matches with what rod and such. Does anyone have any suggestions or a guide as to how you match a rod and reel combo?
I've got two Pflueger 8040MG Supreme spinning reels that have large line capacities and then I've got four Shimano Sahara 1500FB's with smaller line capacities.
Is there advantages for different techniques to have a larger line capacity versus a smaller reel with a smaller line capacity?

Location: LaCrosse, WI | To me, it's a feel thing. I like my rod and reel combos to feel balanced above all else. I like to be able to balance the rod/reel combo on one finger (right above the reel). This tells me the set up is balanced, and will feel the very least wear and tear due to fatigue. This applies to spinning gear the most.
When using trolling gear, I guess I just pick the linecounters I like, then try to couple them with rods that work best for me.

| TJ,
I agree with everything that GNWC Rookie said. In addition, I pair my larger capacity reels (Shimano Stradic 2500's) with 7' rods. One of the advantages of the larger capacity reel is you can cast jigs, crankbaits and slip bobbers farther than you can with a smaller capacity reel. I use my smaller capacity reels (Shimano Stradic 1000's) with 6' rods for vertical jigging. In most cases I am fishing in 20' or less so the large line capacity is not needed and the smaller reel is lighter making it easier on your arms and shoulders.
Everyone has a little different take, with your comfort being the most important. I hope this helps.
