I got something better. Fishing off the dock I see these things and I have a Smoker on the deck so the light came on. I grabbed some corn and a noodle rod and the fun began. Now I only caught one of these beauties so far but I am hooked. It is in the brine right now and hopefully I catch another one or two tonight. If oyu have never tried fishing for Carp, give it a try. This will be something my kids will certainly enjoy and there is no shortage of them around.

I'm too far north for Carp, and find it both a good and a bad thing. I'd smoke a couple a year if we had them in clean water here, and definitely fish them some for fun. Bowhunting carp is also quite entertaining.

It is, isn't it. I could see fishing for the fight, but going to all the trouble of smoking it too? Might explain the layer upon layer of visceral fat....

My name is Jim and I am a former carp fishing addict. LOL

I wouldn't eat one from around here, but they are fun to catch and brew up recipies for bait. I landed a 30#'er before and the only thing I've caught that rivaled it with the fight was a 40# muskie. Caught lots in the 15-20# range. Fun!

Brewing up bait is fun also. Making concoctions of flour, corn, vanilla, honey, etc. Best off the shelf bait I found was potato bread balled around a treble hook. They LOVE it!

Sad. Just sad.

It is just carp fishing. It is not like I am dressing up in spandex and riding a peddle bike for goodness sake.

I love smoked carp. If you have never had it fresh out of the smoker while it is still hot you are really missing out. Plus catching them is fun for the kids too!

When I was about 17 years old, my brother and I decided to try to rid the Beaver Dam River of carp. We started in late July or August when the water was very low. We caught literally hundreds of carp in a weeks time. We saved a fair amount of the meat for baiting coon traps and buried the rest. We went almost every day for about a week straight and got pretty darn efficient at it. There was a certain amout of pride we took at the sheer numbers of fish we caught, but there was a draw back as well - that was a lot of fish to dispose of.

Since the ground was so hard, it was hard to dig a decent hole to get rid of the waste. As each day went on, we got more and more lazy when it came time to bury the waste. The second to last day we went, the shallow hole we dug was only a few feet off a trail leading around the back of the barn. Between the time we left to fish the last day of our quest to clean up the river and when we got home, my Dad took a walk and "found" our largest collection of carp. Any of you older than 25 living in the southern part of Wisconsin at the time probably heard what he had to say when he stepped into 14 inches of carp covered with two inches of dirt....

First off, it's Lycra, secondly, it's pedal, and lastly, that might also explain your layer upon layer of visceral fat.

Sibling rivalry. Ain't it great to watch it live?!

These two could have a reality TV show. "The Stadler Brothers" No, wait, they already had a variety show. How about "Meet the Stadlers". or "Walleyes and a Carp Smoker".

Now that that's out of my brain, along with that nasty image of Dave in Spandex, I will admit that we used to target carp in the very same lagoons that surround the island that the Merc National stage is on. We'd PEDAL our bikes out in the afternoon, and toss the contents of a can of Libby's Sweet Corn in the lagoon, and return later that night with our dad, and a couple long rods, and mor corn. We'd catch carp up to 25 lbs, and there ain't a musky out there that ever fought like thos fish do. Lots of fun, some great smoked fish, and my Mom's garden flourished.

I hear ya Rich, and I got yer back on this one.

Shep - 4/15/2010 8:09 AM ... that nasty image of Dave in Spandex,

Remember, there are only two types of people in this world: Those who wear it, and those who wish they could. (Wal-Mart is the obvious exception, where any fashion rules are completely and utterly disregarded.)

Thanks Shep. Isn't it sad to watch a guy live his life in denial. The closet door is half open and he's inside wearing a full spandex (sorry LYCRA like that makes it any less gay) suit.

How could a thread that started out about one of natures most beautiful fish be turned into something so foul?

Come on guys. Leave Dave alone. I think he looks pretty good in his spandex...

Just remember Dave, you are only supposed to where them while you are actually biking...

Thanks Mark. Why does the fat brother always have to be so bitter? He goes into these calorie fueled rages once in a while...I'm used to it.

BTW, that pic isn't me, I have all my hair (which may be another reason Rich is so angry)
