Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | For those few of you who really know me, you know I'm borderline ACD as far as my boats go. I cannot stand wear mark, dirty carpets, water marks, oily/greesy anything in or on my boats. Same goes for my vehicles. I've been looking at and considering replacing my Bimini/cavas top on my big boat for a few years now. It was the very best "Top Gun" canvas when I bought it 11 years ago, and is still in very good shape but faded out badly from the sun. I called today to price a new full cavas using the same quality type and almosty had a heart attack on the phone. Almost twice the price it was 11 years ago. So I started wondering if I could paint, stain or die the old canvas and if I could, what would I use to do so.
Plain paint would eventually harden, crack and chip off. So I called a friend who is a amature artistic painter and has his own studio in Bay City. He paints on canvas all the time. He suggested (with no guarantees) that I mix an Oil Base paint 50/50 with some Boiled Linseed oil. So I did. Then painted an old piece of canvas I had in the garage from the boats first replacement. Waited 2 hours and was very satisfied with the result. So I commited to do the whole canvas. If it disolves into a pile of mush over night, I'll let everybody know. But for now, it looks like and feels brand new.

| Wow, looks real sharp! You'll be fine. We formulated a clear coating for canvas way back when. Fairly similar. Both of those coatings are pretty durable and flexible enough for canvas for sure. The only issue I would forsee is it yellowing in a couple years. You'll eventually have a top that's screaming to be orange. |

I hope your right. I did make one mistake in the first post. The Top Gun Fabric is a blend of Nylon and Vinyl and not Canvas. I guess I've just always thought of it as canvas. |

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | The color is actually Burgandy, same color as the top used to be before fading. Just hard to tell that in the picture. The old girl still looks good for being 33 years old. Both engines get fired up today and she gets put in the marina sometimes in the next 2 weeks. And that color is pretty close to my favorite briade and it's color.
