I'm planing to take the kids out tomorrow afternoon and hit a few shoteline rocky areas with jigs and slips. Has anybody been out on Winnebago lately? I'm hearing of a few fishing being caught after dark and I hope to find a few while it's still light. Thanks in advance!!

Yep, there's some action along shore at/after dusk. The water is gin clear so a daytime shallow bite might be tough. It looks like there will be a little wind tomorrow to stir things up. Good luck.

The fish are REALLY fat right now all over the system. It will make these early events very interesting. They are still eating but it won't take much to shut them off.

Rich- I caught 7 eyes on the Bay last week and they were REALLY skinny for Bay fish. Maybe 5 eyes of equal size will weigh more than GB fish early this year?? Bet the 24 inchers were only 2.5#-3.0#.

Wow, that is not the problem here. I would say a 19.5" fish right now is pushing 3lbs. They look like they are full spawn females...but they're not.

The fish we caught on the Bay last year in late April/early May were real skinny too. By mid May they had really fatened up. I think that's just from the normal spawning rigors.

Hi there Walleyeralpf! (easy day to lose a board out there!)

Took my dad out for just over one hour, before the waves tuckered him out, and we had two eyes on #5's also. About 5' to 8' of water. West side. Not as productive as Walleyeralph but my dad sure was excited over the fat 20"er.

Out today from 10:30-2:00. I had 2 bites all day but they were worth it; two fat eyes 24" and 19". Pulling harnesses over hard bottom in 10'-11'; Northland holographic Purple Cisco took both fish.

When fishing harnesses has anyone used Gulp crawlers instead of the real kind? How do they compare?

The white bass are hitting above New London. Small spinners and cranks (Mirrolure size SM) are the way to go for the big ones.

Dave,

I've had some success with Gulp crawlers but only on days when they're really biting. In most cases, real crawlers out perform by a wide margin.

There are a variety of weights you can use; bouncers, snaps weights, in-lines, spoons, etc...More often than not I use SnapLoc Dipsey weights
http://www.watergremlin.com/snaploc.html
because I like the versatility.

As for size of the weights, it really depends on how deep you want your harness to run. Running depths are very speed dependent. Out in the mud, I like to start out with a 1/4oz, a 1/2oz, and a 1oz each 30' back from the board moving at about 1.1mph. I always run the shallowest running line on the outside. With this set up, I have the bottom half of the water column covered with one line at ~10', one at ~15' and one right at the bottom. If one depth starts producing, I can quickly change out sinkers on the other lines to get into the strike zone. On the reef, I'll set up in a similar way but use a small split-shot, an 1/8oz, and a 1/4oz respectively. If I get into real shallow water just a split-shot or no weight at all.

Mark, you have not missed anything. The worst spring bite I have ever seen. Bago had by far the best bite going and that was not very good compared to normal. The weather is BRUTAL as we have not had a break from the wind. Upper lakes and river are chocolate milk. Just a few days of stable weather would be great but it ain't happening for a while.

My son and I spent 5 hrs jigging crawlers and leeches. We hit Mansur Reef, Haystack Reef, the reefs around Garlic Island, and near South Asylum Bay: not a single hit. On the way home we stopped at a local lake to catch a few crappies just to make sure we knew how to catch something!!! I did not see a single fish caught all day.......VERY SLOW!!

Not a report. Took the kids skiing yesterday and lost a ski south of Roe's Point. It may have washed up on the shore near there or may have gone a long ways north. It is an adult size with a purple swirl pattern. It is an old ski, but now we only have one. Reward. 379-1871. Thanks Joe

Got a late start, started fishing at 10am on Monday. Started in mud out from Oshkosh, marked fish the whole time, nothing. Moved to red can by long point, didn't mark much fish, but got 1 walleye. Went to shore, tried trolling some reef, nothing. Went back to Oshkosh and got 4 walleyes, both were doubles, were caught in 1 small area. Why, I don't know. Caught 4 on #5 chrome and blue flickershad 40 ft back and 1 on #7 65 ft back. Last 4 caught as I sped the boat up.

Fished on Saturday, 5-29 from 6am til noon. In short, not a walleye. 15-20 Great Whites and as many sheep. Started on the East shore, pretty dead & very clear water. Moved towards Oshkosh and started in 14' and caught most of the whiteys and sheeps there, but no eyes, so moved a little north and out in the mud, decent marks on the graph, but still no eyes, ended up in the mud off of Long Point and caught fewer and fewer fish as the day wore on. Called "uncle" and went to get some chicken and a few ice cold adult beverages. We stuck to cranks, no meat. It was one of those days where you had to tell yourself "it still beats work". I had 9 other buddies in 4 other boats out there. Collectively, we caught one 18" sauger and two 10" eyes. After years and years of easy going, this is brutal and very humbling. At least it is not just me, almost everyone seems to be struggling. I did drive past the dam at Neenah, there is virtually no water/current on the downstream side and I would guess it is about 2' lower than it was 7-10 days ago. Better days ahead I guess.

It's Johnnie Candle's fault! Every time he come here from North Dakota for a tournament the fishing is at an all time low.
Don't believe me, check the records. Our worst spawning year was when the PWT was here in April. YUP, Johnnie Candle.

Don't fret. He leaves on Sunday and I'll predict that Monday we will see the typical 20 walleye days again.

Love Ya' Johnnie !!

Fished Sat the 29th in the mud and had non-stop action. White bass, sheeps and walleyes were all there. Had to weed thru plenty of junk fish, but the walleyes were there. Some nice fish as well. Cranks were the best with no one color really being better than the next. Hit a few waypoints on the gps and just kept going thru them and would get at least one walleye everytime we would pass thru it. Lots of boats out there, but plent of room for all. What a great Memorial weekend it was. Hopefully the cooler weather doesn't slow the bite this week.

OK Sunshine, If that is the way it is, I understand. LOL!!!

I am not sure why this system is so tough. It has everything for good walleye fishing exceot the good walleye fishing. Getting a few each day, but by no means could I predict a tournament limit each day. Every fish comes a different way. Trolling, Cane, Jigging, Spinners, Cranks. You name it, I have tried it and caught at least one walleye on it.

Hopefully for you that live here, it turns on Monday after I leave. If not, Devils Lake is an 11 hour drive and I will offer discounts to Walleye First users for my guide service there.

First time out trolling this year, 2 Walleyes, a 14 and a beautiful 29 incher... released. Not bad for a first time out, a new record for me on the Bago Chain. Both fish were caught on Firetiger #5's 35 back in 7 feet of water.

Memorial Day I was out with my wife and a friend on Clarkes Bay (Lake Winneconne). We kept 11 eyes all about 14" long. We didn't pick up any larger ones. The catfish (up to 6 lbs) and crappies were also hitting our crank baits. Not many whites or sheep. I had to put back a 24" northern that was not going to make it. The hot baits were L&S Mirrolures (size 00M) and Flicker Shads in just about any light color, fire tiger, or silver flash running 15' to 25' back at 2mph.

500 boats! Wow, thats a lot of fried chicken. On a side note, been pouring over the lake oneida map. Its like you took lake winnebago and ran it east to west. The key factor here is WOW or wind + oneidga pancakes = walleyes. Just like the east side MM reefs and a nice lake wind.

What was the mortality rate at the big tourny this weekend ? Things did not look good why didn't they have a set-up like Otter?

Lakeside anglers were there to support the MWC/NTC. They do a great job. Any fish that were deemed not releasable were donated to a food pantry.

By my count, 766 fish for the MWC, and 710 for the NTC, with many of those registered in both. I'd say less than 1000 fish caught all together. Even if they had 50% mortality, which it appeared to me as less, that's less than 500 eyes, in a system that has more than that taken daily for several weeks of the the year by recreational anglers.

They key is the unreleasable fish were going to feed needy families. Heck, I would mind if all the fish weighed ended up there.

That should have said "I wouldn't mind if all the fish ended up at a food pantry".

Kept the lines tight on Sunday morning. My kid for the day, 5th grade Kendell, caught several walleyes, including a 21 incher, along with about 7 whites, and a crappie! All trolling in 19', a couple miles west of Calumet County Harbor. Money bait, 125 back took the big eye! Kidz Wish For Fish is a rewarding experience, and I'm happy to volunteer.

Sunday Morning: Scrounged together a decent basket with a few eater eyes and a nice surprise w/ couple of really nice, chunky crappies. Quite few dink eyes, some saugers too along with the standard sheep and a few whities. No pattern at all other than all were caught trolling; some on cranks, some on harnesses, some in 15', some in 19', some by reefs, some in the mud.

35-1/2 inches...still swimming, though I gave it a stern talking to about chasing Hot-n-Tots. No walleyes.

We had about 13 last night and lost a couple more. We were running cranks and started with most of them low where we were marking most of the fish but they really moved up during the evening and had our best luck about 7' down over the mud near Cal County.

Real good evening bite going in the weeds; slips, crawlers in 2'-4' over the weed tops. Have to sort through a bunch of dinks but some nice eaters are mixed in.

If you don't mind me asking........are you fishing 2 to 4 ft down over weeds in a little deeper water or are you actually in 2 to 4 ft of water and fishing above them in that shallow of water?

The areas I've been fishing are tight to shore -- 2'-4' of water. These areas have been best when there's a wind crashing the shore -- the waves push the weeds down a bit and I'm fishing the jig about 12"-18" below my bobber. Best bite is between 8:30-9:00pm.

The reef bite is also pretty good with slips & jigging in 8 - 10 fow. Lots of smaller fish to sort through, but caught nicer ones up to 18", and a few bonus smallies. Leeches work best, the sheeps don't like them as much as crawlers...

I have been seeing a lot of baitfish again this year. Naked eye sightings of giant schools of minnows (possibly shiners) in the weeds and shallows and electronic sightings of big balls-o'-bait out in the mud.

The bite today was slow for us. Saw quite a show today, we we surrounded by several tournament boats working Garlic Reef. We drifted, and caught two, a couple of Ranger tournament boats were pulling cranks behind boards. We watched them catch 9 or 10 in half an hour, then decided to troll with them. We finished out a 2 man limit in less than one hour.

Everyone give up on bago? I have been out a few times in the last week. Hit and miss as usual but the reefs are producing #'s and the mud bite a few studs. T-Stiks on mud jig and crawler on rocks. Good Luck

Perch are biting very well on crawlers and bugs in shallow water...I thought with lack of clouds fish would be deeper, but all fish caught in less than 8 feet of water high noon with full sun. FLY

Late Sunday afternoon: The bigger perch were hanging off the reef edge in 12.5' where I was fishing. Had the best action just drifting and dragging a jig on the bottom. Lots of small ones shallow and lots of little smallies too. Oh, and it wouldn't be a day on Bago w/o a dozen sheephead. Water is starting to clear up and the temp was still 64 degrees.

I've been out twice in the last week chaseing perch, lots of fish to be caught, you'll have to sort through 'em to get the better fish. Split shot, a hook, and a piece of crawler seems to be getting plenty of action. I would think minnows should get better with the next cold snap/dropping water temps.

The fish are still being caught in the group off of Merritt St., however, they are getting tougher to stay on top of! When the schools come through, its gangbusters, then hours of waiting it seems. Out last night for the evening bite, check out my report on my blog at http://midwestfisherman.blogspot.com/
I would think truck travel will be done in the next day or two if we get any substantial rain today, be carefull out there! The fishing should only get better with the deteriorating ice conditions, but no fish is worth your life so use extreme caution out there this time of the year and always bring a buddy!

First time out on the big lake this season from 10am-2:30pm. Drifted and slip-bobbered reefs -- nothing, not even a sheep head. It was glass most of the day -- I wish I would have put my trolling gear in the boat. Water is really dirty. Surface temp was 56 degrees at 10 and up to 64 by 2.

I was going to slip bobber and troll on the lake tomorrow, but now you have me wondering. I wonder if places closer to the river, e.g. stoney pt, roe's pt would be better slip bobbing now.

With the strong wind I decided to anchor on my secret spot (Sunset Point). Leeches. Moved a couple of times to hit the vein of where they seemed to be traveling, which changes with the wind. Got 9 eaters threw back 10th, then pulled flies in the river, 1 WB. Can we get a weekend with stable weather?

The water is still high but dropping in the Wolf. With the high water and plenty of food in the river there are still plenty of eyes being caught in the New London area, that is if you can keep the white bass from hogging your bait. According to what my Dad and Grandpa told me years ago, it's probably a bit to early for good fishing on the west side reefs, but the upriver lakes should start getting hot.

P.S. Frost the next couple of nights!

Anyone have any good trolling reports yet? Sounds like most of the fish are being caught with a leech and a float on the reefs. I'm ready to break out the boards!

The slip/leech bite has been pretty good all over the system. I did well on BDM last week and good on Bago tonight. Bigger, chunkier fish on the big lake. Haven't put a board in the water yet...soon???

Memorial Day is usually my first outing to try trolling on Butte Des Morts, Winneconnie or Poygan. I would stick to the slip bobbers or jig leach combos on the west side reefs for a few more weeks on Winnebago. However you might have some luck trolling in 8 to 10 feet of water near the reefs this early in the season.

Memorial Day trolling the upriver lakes was very slow with the clear sky and calm conditions. We boated a couple of big cats on Butte Des Morts and some friends or ours did likewise on Poygan and Winneconne. The eyes started to turn on after the wind finally began to blow but it was too late for us. We had to be in by 2:00pm.

P.S. Mike sorry about your loss but think of it this way; A million years from now some archeologist will dig up a Blackberry from an ancient lake bed and start all kinds of stories about alien visitation... Just think about the secret government programs!

P.P.S. Memorial Day: One cat came on a Shad Rap. The rest of our fish came on Mirrolures. Not one bite on a Flicker Shad. Our friends reported the purple "viking" color baits were the best color. Our best color was a fluorescent lime green.
