i'm not getting the right performance on my new X-190 Tiller...only getting 3000 rpms and climbing veerrrrry slowly when starting out, which makes for a hard time getting out of the hole. also limited to 5100 rpms and 38mph top-end with the motor trimmed all the way up before it starts sucking air and alarms go off.

motor is a 90hp Optimax; came with a 13 3/4 x 21p Trophy Plus 4-blade prop.

the Merc prop selector tool suggests the following props:
for overall performance, mid-range, and handling:
- Trophy Plus 13 3/4 x 21p (current prop)
for acceleration:
- Trophy Plus 13 3/4 x 19p
- Vengeance 13 x 18p
for top speed:
- Trophy plus 13 3/4 x 19p
- Laser II 13 1/4 x 19p

i'd like to stay with a 4-blade for the lift getting on plane; does anyone have any suggestions for what i should try next?

or...could it be a motor height issue? mounted too low?

You need a 17 Trophy Plus. Steve and I ran a 190 this spring with a 90 Opti and it ran real nice with the 17!

what hole was the motor mounted on that rig?
mine is in the 4th deepest hole, so could be raised by as much as 3 holes.

The motor was one hole up.

is that the same as 4th deepest? ie., one hole up from the deepest setting?

Yep I would say a 17pitch would be much better.

Don't look past the Lazer II. Maybe a 17", or even a 19" could be just the prop for your rig. I hade a Lazer II on my lund, and it had an awesome holeshot, and a very good top end.

I think the Rev 4 is probably too big a diameter to spin, even at 17". I think your holeshot would suffer.

i tested a few props out tonight at Tuffy HQ...

Hi-Five 21p was way too much, as i expected.

Vengence 18p wasn't enough; it jumps to 4000rpm and gets up on plane nicely with a full load and 2 people, but it starts slipping at 5000rpms and over-revs well past 6000 before the limiter starts yelling at me. could only get 36mph at 5500rpm with it as well.

we'll see how the Trophy 18p does when that arrives...

they sent me a Trophy 17p instead of the 18p. it's okay...pops up on plane pretty decent but still over-revving at the high end (6000rpms) and bleeding speed.
calling HQ tomorrow to get the 18p.

18p will give you more top end, lower your motor 1 hole to keep motor from skipping and stop over rev.

turns out the Trophy only comes in 17p or 19p. so i'm sticking with the 17p since it's pretty fair performance and getting enough rpms to get out of the hole is way more important in a tiller than top-end speed.
i may play around with engine height one day this week to see what it does higher and lower. i'll let you know what i find on that.

You can send that 17 in to a prop shop and have it pitched up to 18 and more cup added. But they need to know your WOT rpms currently and what you want it to be in order to put you in the ballpark. Or they can take a 19 pitch and work it to give more rpms. Either way you can always improve on a stock prop.

Does the Trophy fit tight in your gearcase or does it use a ring? Just wondering, as it can use a blowout ring on the bigger gearcases. I haven't had the ambition to order solid plugs and try it that way with the ring off but it seemed like the ring off gave the best holeshot for the really hot rigs they use for those four letter fish.

so i was thinking about the PVS vent plugs in the props. you know, they're probably there for a reason, right?

i popped out the PVS plugs on the Trophy and it over-revved, shooting to the limiter at rest so not able to get the boat moving.

i installed the "medium" PVS plugs and Voila!, just right Goldilocks. with those plugs in the prop i get 4000rpms out of the hole and can lift 3 people, gear and gas onto plane nicely. it's under-pitched at the high-end, but at 5600rpms i can run full at 34mph and with just me at 36mph. very little high end porpoising that a quick twitch of the handle or trim adjustment resolves.

when i get a chance later in August after getting back from LotW, i'd like to give the 19p Trophy Plus a whirl with the maybe the large hole plugs, or even the 21p again with the large or no plugs inserted.

hi Buckshot...sorry i didn't see this sooner. i was driving through the Cities on the 8th in the afternoon.
i will be coming through the Cities again with the boat probably on August 8th. if you're around at that time, i'd be happy to give you a ride in the X-190 Tiller.
