Location: Rhinelander | 'He admitted to a let-down when the economy forced so many changes with the major tournaments, but kept a positive outlook. "This doom and gloom and negative talk have cast a shadow over the industry. Why do people keep spouting the negatives? Why do some websites keep pursuing and allowing the doom-and-gloomers? Who are those people anyway? They can't be participants, or they'd see what the big-time pros are doing to make this a success. Whatever they say, I keep shooting ahead and try to ignore it," he said.'

Location: in the boat off the east shore somewhere |
well as someone who has just once or twice posted (never doom and gloom ever ever......) i wanted to thank the writers of this artical for the content. THANK YOU! As a walleye tourny fan i now seem to know a bit about Mr. Joe Okada. A point made in the artical that if you can servive in the industry, work hard and find a way to make it wile times are tuff.. .... well yes you can make it big when things get better. Aim is on the right track in my opinion. as for doom and gloomers and negitive posts comments or complaints about the industry, tournaments , wildlife managment, manufacurers or competitors ... I personaly enjoy it all.. good idias come from negitive posts or uncontroled rants on line. im thankfull for all who throw in two cents.... without a responce we woulnt have these back and fourth seemingly endless threads. i LIKE EM.... But Back to Joe and his dream.... I now have a face to the name and something of a history on the kid .... (sorry..PRO walleye angler , promotor and Madison area guide.) easy to remember a name and a face when you know a bit about the angler... Good luck Joe and next time your on stage , though i may or not be there to watch live or on an AIM rewind vidio or even on a leader board from day to day i will take notice of you on the list.

HEY JIM and Steve... GIVE US MORE! Way too many of my old trusty grizzly veteran walleye pro's are staying home on there porches and as a fan getting to know the new kids is important. if i ever sign up as an Amiture in a pro am and draw Joe as my pro for day one i wont lose sleep.... sound like he is sharp and it would be a great day on the water.

| In 2002 a colleague of mine recommended Joe to me for a guided trip on Lake Mendota. It was a great trip as he put us on a nice pod of fish. I would see Joe occassionally on the water or at D&S Bait shop and he would keep me up to date on the tournaments he was fishing. He recognized my interest and encouraged me to fish an MWC tournament. I called a buddy and we fished the 2006 MWC on the Illinois River, from that point on I was hooked!
Despite being 13 years my junior Joe has been my mentor. If I ever had a question on a technique, a knot, place to stay etc. I could always call Joe and he would help me out. I have fished places I never thought I would have ever fished and I have met people that have helped me as a fisherman and a person that I would have never met. There has been a lot of discussion of what is wrong with tournament walleye fishing. Joe is an example of what is right with tournament fishing. I don't have enough knowledge to say what is needed to help tournament fishing but I think Joe is doing his part and he has brought at least one person to the table. In tournament fishing I found the same competitive spirit that I had playing baseball in college. If Joe had not encouraged me I would still be looking for an outlet for that competitive spirit. For that I thank Joe and I am sure all of those in the FLW Central divison thank Joe as well as I have contributed to their winnings!

Location: Chicago IL. | Well said Roy!!! I had the honor of traveling with Joe and his dad Dave, on the MWC trail for a couple of years and we had a blast!!! It was the most fun I had tournament fishing. He is a super guy and has that knack of finding fish. As Jayman has said, he always has positive energy, wich keeps him going in this sport. Keep a eye on this guy, you have not heard the last of him. Got get em Joe!!!! | |

| You are seeing first hand the true rising of a star in this sport. Joe is young, full time, very skilled (and getting better), and extremely well respected in walleye fishing circles. He hangs with a group of young stud fisherman, like Robert Blosser, my son Chase, and Brett King and lives to fish. Nice interview Joe and get ready to man up in South Dakota! | |
