| I'm fairly new to trolling and still trying to figure things out, so I'm looking for any opinions. I have 6 Berts stainless rod holders on a track system that I have used for a year now, but I'm wondering if I should try something different. Any opinions? I can't seem to get my boards to run very well in a nice spread, so I was wondering if I should be angling the rod holders at all in any direction? Towards the back of the boat? Also, do I need to have the rods at different heights, the front rod having the highest angle, or should the all be the same? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Location: Neenah, WI | Are your rod holders set up with 3 on each side or all 6 across the back of the boat? If you have 3 per side the front should be your outside board and set at the highest angle. Middle holder for the middle board and angled just a bit lower and the rear one for the inside and a little lower yet. I've fished from boats with all 6 across the back and it's a pain in the behind. You'll get a better spread with the rods out over the water at a 90 degree angle to the boat. Watch how other anglers set up and you should be fine. If you're real new to trolling I would suggest you get the newest edition (7th I think) of the Precision Trolling book. Some folks call it the trollers bible. Lots of info on trolling depths and speeds for all popular baits and for weights as well. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Good Luck.

| or just start by mounting one on each side up front. try to mount them so you can pull them without stepping up front if possible. just reaching over the counsel is safer and easy. next time you pick up rods maybe go a hair longer with the front two but storage is important so colapsable is nice. another simple trick to keep you out of trouble is to keep the boat moving with the waves and wind. try not to buck the system. better to pull everything up and head back up wind to go back over fish then run into the wind. oh and when i first started trolling years ago i baught the less expensive yellow bird boards. try to avoid the standard small size as the crank baits your pulling will be a bit much for them. good luck and have fun.. keep the wind at your back. dont be afraid to ask questions as many wont answer because there not sure about your current boat set up. more information is always better. ....:) Brad |
