Hi all

This morning as I arrived at work, I found the river filled with shell ice and many of the flows are THICKER than shell. I know they are predicting a good rain monday so I am not calling it ice up in fremont yet, just wanted to get it started so I can update everyone as needed.

Right now I would not go on the river in a boat. I will let you know more on monday.

Update 12:24 PM

This morning the river sounded like rice crispy's as the flows were moving down river. It has now become silenced. The flows have quit moving and are slowly getting bonded into place. I think by morning she will be tight all the way across here in fremont.

The rains last night sure did a number toi the ice but not the way you would think. It seems to have loosened everything from shore and by gills this morning it was full of flows. Fremont was relatively clear however. There are flows down river, but it is getting cold tonight.

I wonder if the river will rise much with the ground that was kind of frozen and run off. I will watch today.

This morning finds the river at a stand still with strips and pockets of open water, but for the most part she is froze. I am sure that the last of the open water will seal up in the next day or so. 119 and a wake up. I bet it goes out way early this year, just got that feeling.

I am going to drill some holes saturday to see what we have here. I honestly believe that it will be a VERY EARLY Year. start of march because the current is there and the water is higher than normal at this time. if we keep getting snow march 1 could be the date. I hope so.

hahhaahahahahahaaa I have been busy with things and almost forgot. I did drill holes that saturday and I did drill some this last saturday as well. Here is what I found. Right here in front of Fort Fremont we have 10.5" of ice. Now, its not great ice. There is about 3" of clear ice at the bottom and the next 7.5" is white ice, FROZEN SNOW. The trench in fremont is open. A sled went through on saturday at the boat landing again. I rode up river and I found open spots where there never is one. The river currents are strong. I think the ice will be eaten away really fast this year.73 and a wake up till april 1st. I think march first will be more like it.

Still froze, water dropped about 2ft in the new london area. The corp opened the gates for winter draw down. Still higher than normal. The ice is shakey in many many spots. I dont think it will last long at all when it warms in february.

still froze, BUT, this snow is pushing it down and causing many "water on top of the spots" to form.

Fremont has its open path and it is getting wider by the minute. Drilled holes up river and the water is just gurgling up and through. The ice top is filling with water everywhere and its no different on the river. If the weather stays nice you will find open water to fish very soon. Get the boat ready and set, it may be by the first weekend in march. I will let you know how the fishing is as well.

The weight of the snow is doing its thing. The stretch of open water in fremont has escallated to almost down past the rocks past the new bridge. The side across from Fort Fremont is all wet and sloppy. I suspect it will all break out soon. We drilled holes and to say the least, there is not much good ice left. I will not be going on the ice down here anymore this season.

Get the boats ready. We will be scheduling preseason check ups starting next week. Call Megan and set it up. Get ready boys, here it comes. After this next dumping it could be in a week or so.

Well, its 317 friday and I can see open water 1/3 the width of the river all the way down to gala. I Was down by the river just a few moments ago and a thunderous crack ran down the river. It looks like the ice is starting to crown and push water up on top. The west side of the river is black all the way past the Fort and past the next bend. The rain last night was enough to get the snow just a melting I guess. With the frost still in the ground it is running right in the river.

Get them out and ready, you will be on it next weekend.

Drove past the river this morning and it is starting to break up. Seen sheets of ice flowing, yet the slot of open water has not changed much. Maybe its opening up above. The black lines on the ice are from water after last nights dusting and they run all the way past Fort Fremont. Get 'em ready boys.

Wednesdays Walleye Whip around revealed a few neat things.

Ice is getting thin in many areas all the way to newlondon. Guths has a dark patch but found open water by sandy banks off the higher riff areas. Was to chicken to go up to the stone dam but suspect it is open there. Current is heavy in the big cut. Found it was 2 inches in one drill hole.

Gills has a black area and that it. Hmmmmm

Fremont gets wider everyday and it is open all the way around to fort fremont. With sun today it should help. It is stil;l not half the river wide.

DEPERE, head to depere this weekend. There are fish stacked on fish and the water is open. They are wacking them goodly. You cannot fish the wolf yet, go to depere.

I will post when there is some change.

March 17th ice report.

On wednesday I took a drive.

Newlondon, iced in

Guths, Iced inn

Above the railroad bridge at gills, iced innn

from railroad down to hahns in orihula, 1/2 way open.

When people start to push out chunks this weekend it will get bunched up and close off travel so if you really want to chance it, go ahead.

Travel will not be for the faint of heart this weekend. This may change if we get some warm rain but as of noon, thursday its BE CAREFUl.

Go to Depere and get warmed up.

Just took a ride from redbanks through fremont. LOTS OF ICE BERGS, and still plenty of shelf ice. I am sure saturday will bring lots of guys breaking ice which will make the river extremely dangerous. The water is 33.2 degrees so no rush yet. By next weekend it will be very clear I am sure. I am not calling ice out as there is way to much left.

Saturday morning has found 20 rigs in fremont. There was 3 at gills. Lots of shelf ice and lots of flats are covered in ice yet. Guys are running high and fast on plane like they dont have a care. There are floating bergs everywhere. Hope they all stay safe. For the rest of us hang in there till this rain comes it should have everything cleared by mid week.

Oh yea, a report. Very good river rats experienced a tough bite yesterday in clear and cold waters. Everyone I talked to said they want it to get a bit dirtier.

OK Today is the first full day of spring, it came at 6:21 pm yesterday, and with it came a good flush of ice. Like most of it!!

With that said, Today 3-21-11 I call ice out from gills down to the mouth. There is still some small areas of shelf ice that will break off and you could hit them so caution is to be exercised. Above the train bridge it is still iced in and will mostlikely melt where she sits. In newlondon it is floating like a big berg in the river all free from the shores. The river is on the rise.

I was out sunday morning and can tell you first hand that the fish are here.

Fort fremont does not have a public launch. The best one on our side of the river is triangle campgrounds just down river from the FORT. Tell them we sent ya'.

The ice you see in the pictures has started moving, it is clearing the center of the river. There is 30 to 50 ft of shoreline snow and ice guarding the edges yet. Maybe they will move through by weeks end. I will post friday morning and let you all know from gills and fremont.

The river is not in grand shape. Last nights freeze has chunked it all up again. It looks like it may be that way until the warmer weather gets here. I believe a guy can navigate but you will need to be very cautious. The water temp is 32.1. It was almost 33 last weekend.

I think I am goiing to use this last weekend to get the "LIttle things" done around the house and on the boat for all hell will break loose the first weekend in april.

Have a good weekend all!!

OK GUYS here is the scoop. There is a lot of shell ice coming down the river. I am sure it is not thick but either way it is coming down. Yesterday it stopped by late morning, I am sure it just burned off. Most the shore line ice melted away yesterday so travel should clear but use caution. This time of the year err on the side of safety, you will only last 45 secounds in the river before you die. Water temp at dock this morning is 32.3 and that farenheit.

This from Gills down, upriver you are on your own.

Have a great weekend.

Shell ice is there again today. Lots of bergs yesterday. Many place up nort letting go. The water is up and is expected to get deeper as the week gets longer. Caution to all using the water. If you anchor keep a knife ready to cut your rope should a berg get caught it will flip you over.

Good luck all.

First day in a week that shell ice did not form on the river over night. There are still bergs floating but it is shell ice free. Give it a day or 3 and I think a Tsunami wave of fish will bum rush the river. Be it friday, saturday, sunday or monday the mother load will start one of them days and last for a week.

I have yet to see much ice today and have 36.8 at the dock now. Caution to all those who use this river, there may be a berg or 2 that are under water.
