It was dark this morning so I couldn't see the full extent of the coverage, but we have ice on the lake!

Bob,

We've had ice on Big Butte for a week already, I'm sure it's 3 inches or better behind the cane beds. I walked on it in front of my house a week ago.

I'm al set for you and Thumper to take me out on the ice. I even got a Jiffy Power auger so my arms don't get tired by drilling 1000 holes looking for my first fish through the ice.

Seriously, I think the ice is thick enough to fish on it by the slough bridge.

I also have 2 heaters and a chain saw so I can cut a 1/4 mile path for trolling

Thanks for the update Dom. The ice on Bago was blown away during the day today. I've got the itch bad, so I may just head down you way this weekend.

I will be out this weekend for sure.

Purple, I was probably going to fish by you anyway, so I'd be happy to have you along. You won't need the Jiffy quite yet though. Message me if you really want to go out.

I'm going for a walk later today down the wishwash trail, I'll venture out with a spud to see how thick the ice is. It must be thick enough by now. I wonder why noone is at skipper buds yet.

Thumper, I just got back from a guided trip from Bay de koc. We caught lots of fish using gill nets! Do you think that would work for panfish?

"Bay de koc"? I don't think I ever want to go there...it sounds...well, kinda gay.

I will outfish your gill nets with my pocket fisherman any day.

Managed only 4 keeper gils out of about 75 caught last Sunday. Didn't make it out to Sunset, just fished a little channel on 'Bago. Less than 3" of ice.
Waxies outfished spikes for the first time. ever. A few small perch and crappie mixed in as well.

east shore has a solid 4 inches of nice black ice.. a budy has been out a half mile today and didnt find anything less than 4 , he didnt fish. yes he is nuts but very experianced.. ice didnt crack or pop at all . i dont recomend it but by the weekend you should be good to go! This was an east shore report by the way... and no steam in the mornings with the sun at our backs on the east shore as we look over the lake... good news apears to be tight.

There were many patches of open water still on the west side yesterday -- Cowling, North Asylum, and out from the lighthouse at Asylum bay all had areas of open water as of yesterday. Be very careful out there/

Walked out onto Bago near my house about .4 mile to the first major heave. Had a consistent 5" of solid black ice up to that point. Didn't have the cojones to try and cross the heave. According to my Lakemaster I was in 13' of water -- good enough to try for some perchies soon.

Quite a mess in front of my house on Ricker Bay and out from the Hook and Spear clubhouse. There was a very large shove out from the clubhouse and it did go down some, but it'll freeze now and will make things kind of ugly. The open water will freeze up OK but it'll take time. We had such a good start too.

I went clean through Saturday morning...only a bit over the knees, but enough to wake a guy up. Took a step, heard that tell-tale spiderweb crack, but before I could get turned around, sploosh. Decided to fish a little safer spot after that. My feet finally warmed up about 36 hours later.
Hopefully the wind blew a lot of the snow off the ice.

The north end is looking great. South from Payne's Point, it looks like the entire ice sheet buckled and stacked up into a tangled moonscape. I doubt vehicle travel will be possible in those areas. Might have a whole bunch of new members at the PP Hook & Spear Club this winter.

I have been able to make it out in areas like that but I was wearing this:

7-8" on BDM...only a few tiny whitebass. And I mean tiny. About 7" of snow with some drifts up to 12". A little slush in some places with the deeper snow. Heading back to 'Bago tomorrow...at least I can find a meal there.

Finally was able to get onto the north end yesterday. Had 7" of solid, clear ice up to 3/4 of a mile out. There were a few seismic shifts while I was out there and one of the heaves I crossed in the morning was a little wider on my way in. Fished in 13'-15' and had mostly sniffers and a little action but couldn't get 'em on the ice -- the perch were just kind of gumming the minnows and would let go. On my walk back in, I found some weeds through the clear ice and will be giving those areas a shot tomorrow.

I've had tip-ups out in front of my house for a week straight (attened) without a single bite. I measured the ice 200 yards off shore today and it id 5 inches... it was 12 last week.

I was out by the cluster off Wagoo very early this morning. Set up away from the group to the south a few hundred yards and had steady action -- a half dozen perch with 3 over 11", a couple of whities, and a 13.5" crappie. By 9am the group grew and I was completely surrounded and the traffic killed the bite. Blue/chrome rap tipped with waxies took almost every fish.

Thanks to the OSFC for their hard work allowing us to get out there.

We had a spot near one of the cracks out in the middle where a sheet had been pushed under another and we couldn't even drill through it all. Lots of cracks/shoves out there this year in all directions. Most are probably safe to cross, but boy you better be careful if you're the first guy.
No access off Merritt, if Waugoo is the only access, it'll get beat up pretty bad.

Not much for fish, kept 6 crappie and fought a sturgeon for a while on 2lb test before he gave up and spit the hook
Lots 'o shad out there.

Does anyone know anything about the barrier erected at the access point at end of Indian Point Rd. I've used this access to get out to Garlic for years and when I went to check out the conditions today, I see that 'someone' has planted two poles and run a cable across the access with a 'No Lake Access' sign. Any info?

Update: After piecing together numerous messages, it seems that 'someone' is just playing games here. After a report from one angler that he went off that access point yesterday, I checked it out this morning and, sure enough, the cable was gone and there were numerous vehicle tracks out onto the lake.

Went on a little adventure up to Little Sturgeon Bay today and had lots of fun. Caught lots of whitefish and lost even more. Also caught a bunch of small perch and a few small eyes too. Sure beats the heck out of the frustration on Bago.

Gotta be nasty out on the lake with this snow/wind. I guess for us ice fishermen it's good it happened right before sturgeon spearing instead of right after.
