While searching through this site it seems that a #5 blade is the ticket but when would a smaller blade be the choice?

Generally speaking bigger blades for open water trolling, smaller blades for more finesse type presentations around structure.

I can't help you there, I don't do much river fishing other than the Wolf and I jig almost all the time there. Hopefully, someone else can answer that question.

I spend most of my time on the Mississippi, and I usually use #3's when trolling with bottom bouncers or three ways. When the flow is up and the water is dirty I'll upsize to a #5.

Match the hatch. Bigger blades on bigger water like the great lakes. I find myself being more successful using smaller blades on smaller waters where the forage is generally smaller.

I've used #4 willow leafs on Lake Erie for25 yrs. Work good.
