| Can somebody give me a good rundown on everything involved with leadcore line trolling. rod, reel, line(# test) brands, terminal tackle, connections, leaders, etc. Feel free to add every little detail. Will help me get thru winter!
I picked up a few rods at my custom rod guy and he had a different view of lead core than the catalogs. thanks |

| Ice for me, I use 18# test lead core, Suffix lead core is suppose to real good stuff, all 10 colors on a series 47 Diawa line counter reel, with a Fireline Crystal leader typically 10 to 14 pound test, connect the two lines with uni knot and a crosslock snap swivel. Won me a Ranger Boat using that set up |

| Thanks guys. deans seems to be the place. Kirt. Few more ? backing on the reel before putting on the LC? leader length? Also tying knots in the lead core, any other tips? Does using leadcore line require any special guides on the rod? notice LC rods run shorter... reason? Thanks for the info... helping me get thru this bad ny winter. Gonna try and put together some low cost trolling outfits for part time trolling... |

| I run a 10'6" and a 6'6" leadcor rods, a decent 8'6" works also, typically a 20' leader of fireline, go to Ebay they have Diawa Great Lakes size 47 reels used for a good price. If you dont have rods yet Deans Tackle Box makes and awesome leadcore rod |

Location: Dixon, IL | I use the same set up as Kirt, 10'6" and a 6'6" rods , I prefer the Scheels trolling series rods, and size 47 diawa reels. No backing, all ten colors fits perfect. I use a 10-12 ft leader of 10/4 fireline. I pull a little lead out and tie a overhand not in the dacron left, then just tie a improved clinch knot and tighten it up and you are ready to fish.

| Thanks for the info, many questions answered. I have no problem with any of the tackle mentioned. Problem now is time to go fishing! USPS has me 6 days a week so I see no extended trips for a long time. Right now, I may just pick up a few reels and load them up. got a few old 7ft rods here will work. Of course I have boxes of lures.
I live on the mohawk river here in new york (lock and dam)and this technique will work well.
Thanks again |

| Since time is very important, be sure to tie some extra leaders and wrap them around a foam water weenie. If you use swivels and snaps, tie em on, un wrap and it only takes a single knot to be back in the water. Efficient fishing is way more enjoyable. |

Location: Orland Park, IL | Dave, leadcoring is nice. I like to keep my leader around the length of the rod. I use the long 8 footers plus deansw peregrine 5 foots, off the back. Like rusty said, tie up a few around a noodle. I use fireline quite a bit on the rivers.
I think I am gonna have to take a run out to the mohawk and see whats happening. heard some good things about that river. |

| Anytime! I live 1/2 mile from river. Small compared to what you got. Some good fishing, one stretch has no launchs, about 8 miles, very underfished. Will try and get you out here for some fishing, maybe some rib, maybe a few beverages. on me. Teach me... |

| What differentiates a lead core rod from other trolling rods?

| I have been using leadcore line the past 6-7 years to contour troll in rivers, reservoirs and sometimes lakes.
My favorite reels are the Abu Garcia 7000i Syncro linecounters. I have also used the 47 series Daiwa’s. I like this size of reel because they allow me to spool on an entire spool of leadocre line (10 colors).
I use 18lb leadcore. I may use just a little fireline backing but most of the time I use zero backing. My leaders are 10 or 14lb crystal fireline and range from 12-30’. This is where your personal preference comes in. Most guys use at least one rod length. I attach the fireline leader to my leadcore using a uni-uni knot. I peel back the sheath of the leadcore about 6-10” to strip out the leadcore. This makes for a smaller knot. At the end of my leader I use a snap.
I do not like to attach the leader using a swivel. I feel that the metal swivel going thru the guides cannot be good for the guide incerts. Not saying that it doesn’t work. It does.
I make several of there up so they are all the same size incase I tear off.
My rods are 12’ MH and 6’6” Scheels trolling rods. These rods have really changed the way we fish allowing us to run 4 rods at once without tangle. I prefer the 6’6” rods over the 5’ shorty as it provides more play and just feels more like a rod. What makes a good leadcore rod? Backbone to handle the lead and a sensitive tip so I can see the action of the lure. Remember, leadcore is no stretch.
We use the long and short rods so we can run 4 rods out of the back of the boat and avoid tangles. If I was only running one rod I would use my 12’. It has such great action. We also use them for longlining fireline.
