When will they spawn in 2011?

I was thinking about how typically the walleyes spawn on Pool 9 near Victory a few days on either side of 10th each April. Watching them pull the nets there for the fish hatchery is "eye" opening at times with the shear numbers of huge females they get.

With the extra flow and cold conditions when do you think they will spawn this year?

Will they be later because of the cold water temps right now?

Hi Dale. We are right in the middle of our spawn on the IL. They are getting spawned out fish already. I think the apr full moon has alot to do with it.

Well, if that's the case then five days either side of the full moon which is on April 18th (period April 13th-23rd) per the tables. Should make for some hot fishing at that time here on the river. All the females brought in last weekend were still hard with eggs and no males were milting. Hopefully we get a good spawn and a strong year class as the river population of walleye seems a little light right now compared to years in the past at least up here. How are the numbers of fish down your way on the river?

The best it has been in years. All the 13" sauger we were getting last year grew up to 16-17". The dnr took a giant load of females to the hatchery from the last 2 weekends. The IL. is on a super rebound and after this year look for those 4lb+ to make a comeback next year. Also there was 59 walleyes caught at the MWC. That is WAY up from previous years, so they are also on the way back nicely. With the invasion of asian carp it was looking bleak, but the fish are adapting and on a good comeback. As far as pool 14. Our numbers are way up because of the slot here. Man I would like to see that up and down the river for 5 years. The problem has been water. Its was rockin for the most part of last year and this is not looking good either(so far). We dont have the backwater in 14 like it is up north. I had to cancell 4 trips already this year.

I heard the fishing on the Illinois River has been unbelievable this season from those who fished last weekend at the MWC event. That is very encouraging. Catching 59 walleyes down there is impressive to, as it wasn't that long ago I recall catching a walleye in the Illinois was like finding a four leaf clover.

Too bad you had to cancel that many trips. That's got to be taking a toll on the pocket.

Now, as far as a slot limit... we would like that more than you know as anglers. It would be scary how excellent the trophy fishery we would have if a simple one over 28" would make on this set of pools. Five years and things would be quite impressive I am sure.

I think this is a topic for a another thread.....
