Location: Chicago | When does sturgeon season begin? Does anyone have any advice on catching sturgeon on the wolf? I usually hook into several every year while fishing for white bass but have never targeted them. Any info would be appreciated. |

| Waterwolf, There is no hook and line season on the wolf you should not be targeting them either. The only season is spearing on Winnebago in February.
Good Luck

Location: Chicago | No hook and line season you say. I did not know that. I just assumed that since it was legal on the WI river it was legal on the wolf. Nevertheless, I always seem to hook into several of them every year while fishing for other species. I release them of course as I have much respect for the sturgeon and am well aware that they are illegal to keep. What is the proper thing to do when you hook into a sturgeon? Should I cut my line when I have identified the fish as a sturgeon? Can I net him and snap a picture before releasing him? |

| I beleive it is illegal to even take them out of the water if you hook into one. |

Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | I talked to the DNR in Oshkosh about this last year. You may bring the fish into the boat to retrieve your bait (remove the hook) and take a quick photo. To handle the fish in a manner that might harm it, placing it in the livewell, or releasing it in a rough manner will get you a ticket sure as can be...
It is illegal to target them. That will get you a ticket as well. |
