Location: Berlin | I believe these guys brought in the biggest weight of the year on bago which won the Boat Doc event today. Over 21lbs in these conditions is outstanding. Great job, it was only a matter of time. Could not have happened to two nicer guys. CONGRATS!!! |

| Great job guys. How was it done? Nobody ever talks fishing anymore just bragging, went on the west end of Poygan and got ten today on Salmos 23 feet back at 1.6mphs lots of fish not big but eaters had one at 23 inches for those who like to catch fish. |

| Congrats to Mike and Mark!
Thanks to them, my partner and I finished in 2nd place!  We only had 16.41 lbs so we had a ways to go to catch them.
The bite was awesome for us and them fishing shallow weeds. We just couldn't get the really big ones. One other non-tournament boat had a 23.5" and a 26"+ 7 lber right next to us. We had our 5 by 9:00 and held out the final spot in our well for the really big girl, but it wasn't meant to be.
Big fish + shallow water = tons of fun on a jig stick! |

| Thanks guys. I wish I could say it was easy, but it wasn't. We only caught 7 walleyes all day. Yes, we were in the weeds also. There's not enough room to type out directions to where we were. Besides, even if I did, you probably still wouldn't end up in the exact right spot. All the fish were in about a 10 square yard area of the weeds. We would catch a couple, go 2 hours, then catch a couple more and so on. We caught the last one at 1pm and started the slow easy ride in. Only advice I can give is look for the carp. If you find carp, you'll find dirty water. If find dirty water, you have a better chance of finding fish. Pitching weeds is not easy fishing. Rich S can attest to that. If your willing to stand up all day and grind it out, then I wish you the best of luck.
That's the end of my 2011 tournament season. In three weeks I'll be on a beach in Maui.
The Boat Doc put on a pretty good event. I wish them luck in the 2012 season. I believe they still have one more tourny left on July 10th.
Thanks again guys. It was pretty cool that my first win came with my Dad. He's the one that taught me almost everything I know.

Location: Darboy USA | Agree, congrats on the nice win!! It's also very refreshing to see the top 2 teams post about what they were doing. Everyone always thinks they are doing something unique and top secret, these guys didn't give out all the details, but enough for folks to know what they were doing and where they were fishing. Kudos to both for being those type of people!

Are these weeds grown to the surface or are they submergent? I guess another way to ask it is, if someone saw the productive weeds would they think bass?
Are you fishing these weeds in more or less than 5 fow?

| The weeds at this time of year are right to the top of the water and usually are visible as early as the 3rd week of May. The weed bite usually peaks in the first or second week of June, but was much later this year.
Generally, the weeds grow in 2-7 FOW. We were fishing in 1.5'-4'. You catch bass right along with the walleye. We caught about 20 walleye and 15 largemouth on Sunday and you also will get the occasional northern, catfish, bullhead or bluegill. We would have probably had about 15 lbs. worth of bass as well.
As Mark stated, cloudy water is the key to the fish being that shallow. Generally we like to see our jig disappear in the bottom foot or two of water. If it is too muddy, you can still catch fish, but it is more difficult. Too clear and the fish are nowhere to be found. On occasion, you will pull your jig off a weed and witness the walleye actually coming out of the dirty water from below to inhale the jig. It is awesome when that happens.
There are other key factors when the fish usually move into the weeds such as water temp, baitfish, carp etc., but I can't give away everything! |
