This morning has found the river quite unpassable, and not by a small measure. Even though there is a small window of above freezing daytime temps coming for a day or 2 I dont think there will be enough to make it passable by boat again till spring. So, officially we will call Ice up on December 9 2011. That makes it 112 days and a wake up till Ice out projected for April 1st 2012.

Well, it stayed as is so far. The ice is over 1" thick at the docks with a spud. I know its warming a bit but I dont see it leaving now. Have a great winter!!

The ice is melting away from the shore lines. It is now a ice berg floating as a whole piece and I gotta believe that the only reason it is not moving down is poygan is froze over. A couple more days like this and we may be back in boats this weekend. I winterized mine but I will rewinterize if I could get out just one more time.

DONT GET THE BOAT OUT QUITE YET!! There is still ice on the river, I cannot believe it. It is one big cake that needs to be broken up a bit to melt, or some sun. Here are some pixs.

This morning found the river clear of the big ice that was present for the last week and found a fresh shell ice on it. I am sure the sun will burn it off and if someone just had to go they could by noon. I am sure it will freeze over the next day or so and that will be it. Because of the danger in 34.1 degree water and the quickness it can freeze trapping someone down stream, I am leaving the original date as ice up. That will make it 105 and a wake up to april first. Remember that in 2010 we called it on 3-15 and in 2011 on 3-21. I could not go back to 2009 and 08. I think that is when I started it to see what them dates are. Maybe sworrall can turn on a 2nd page so we can get a average.

Shell ice has melted away with the sun and the river has some shoreline shelf ice left but it is wide open and runable. There may be some bergs so if you go caution. I am sure morning will find some shell ice. That is your friday afternoon report.

And just 2 hours later she is getting chunky with shell ice again. I can almost stand there and watch it form. Beware if you decide to try it in the morn.

last night when the wind finally calmed down, the remaining open water spots, froze over. I hope this cold sets in good and long and gets things so we can start river fishing through the ice. 88 days and a wake up.

Weekly report:

After the 3 inches of snow the river opened up even more. It was almost half way open in places in fremont. What ice is out there is not very good at all. There are spots opened up in many places down here by Fort Fremont. Get your boats ready as I really dont see the ice making it very long this year. 77 and a wake up.

But I know I will jinx it by saying I think it will be about 50 and a wake up.

Say, Has anyone heard of the event on April 7th at Gills landing called "The Clash"?

Started getting a little antsy to snowmobile on the river so this morning a couple guys went to drill holes out front. 4inches at the best spot and it was not clear blue ice. Really crappy ice. Its even wet on top. 68 and a wake up till april 1st. I got my boat work started sunday, I dont believe it will take much longer than march 1st. Its gonna need to get way colder my friends.

OK, after doing some recon on sunday, I have the numbers. Any where from New london to the mouth, I did not see or hear of seeing anymore than....... 6....Inches.

More leaned in the 4 inch direction. Yes, there were sleds running from fremont to the mouth on sunday, but they did it blindly. There are spots that have just recently froze up where there is sled marks. These may open up when it warms up.

62 and a wake up, but only 31 and a wake up to March 1st.

Are you ready yet?

Old lady river is giving er up. Fremont is partially open all the way to the new bridge. Its ugly out there. There is open water stretch just up from here and just down from here. If we get a sizable amount of rain it will flush the ice right out.

I have been on the water on valentines day. It froze back over but not hard. Lets see where it goes after the weekend.

She ugly guys. There is standing water in many areas and the trench from fremont continues to push open farther down river. I have watched ditches and the level of the ice in said ditches rise over the last 5 days. It is creating current for sure. I would bet that there are guys on poygan getting ready for spearing who are close to the river that can attest to the fact that the water is getting dirtier out there. Colder weather coming in and then some precip next week.

53 and a wake up. 22 and a wake up to march 1st.

With the recent cold temps the ice has almost completely healed itself. I am sure it is not very thick but non the less it is ice. The snow today actually covered it.

Hurry Up and wait.

46 and a wake up to april first.

River is chewing paths everywhere. The wednesday drive found feeder rivers full and pushing, most of them open. They have carved openings at there mouths. If these storms come in, then melt, it will open her quickly.

OK Are you ready yet?

The ice above gills is intact, kinda, from what I could see. Down from gills it is broken into sheets and is opening a spot tofish as we speak.

Fremont has shoreline ice and the lions share is wide open. It extends to gala area and then the sheets start to pile up.

Fort Fremont has sheets in front but as I said, it is sheets and they arent very thick. The current will pick up and wash them out soon. If we gat the big heavy snow it will sink the ice and we will be wide open for business.

I will drive on wednesday and let you know what the water looks like for the weekend. 1 day and a wake up to march 1st. 32 and a wake up to april 1st. Looks like you will start fishing very soon. No need to go dream any longer, JUST DO IT.

MARCH 1-2012

Wednesdays drive during the rain found a interesting fact. The ice was being eaten away. Fact is, you can launch in fremont, fish the rocks, fish between the bridges fish down past Fort Fremont and I dont know how far past chicos at this point. Up from gills is still ice. New london is ice but shakey. It will go when it rises.

IT IS FISHABLE!!

CAUTION CAUTION,

There is a ton of shelf ice and when the run off raises the river, it will break free and could trap you. I am not calling ice out, just telling that there is dangerous turf that can be fished. Last year everything ran 3 weeks behind, this spring it swings back. My notes say that by 3-17 the river will be loaded with walleye.

The river was covered in shell ice this morning. The temps are at 33degrees. I am sure after this warm up this week, the rest of the shoreline ice from gills down will give in to the rising tides. Plan next weekend. I will be on the water somewhere wednesday and give a good acount first hand from gills to the mouth.

Wish I could put pics up today. The south wind all night has all but eaten away all the shoreling ice here at Fort Fremont and the area. The down river ice I do not know about. As I said I will get a look at it tomarrow. The gills area is open but again, have not seen between redbanks and gills, but will on wednesday. The expected outcome is, that you will be able to fish the wolf on saturday.

MARCH 7th ICE OUT.

The river from Gills landing to the river mouth at Poygan is wide open. There is some shelf ice left but otherwise it is open. There are some back waters holding ice that WILL release chunks in the water so extreme caution is to used.

I will give you a heads up. It is shallow and cold. The current just started to pick up. Temp was 33.5. Sunny days will help that. There are also schools roaming on poygan so I guess that they could enter the river at any given moment. Just gotta' be there to greet them.

I will let you know when the ice above the railroad bridge at gills opens for travel.

River starting to rise. The new london graph has it spiking next week the 15th at 7.5. We seen a 2 inch increase over night here in fremont. Poygan is falling apart quickly. Just heard by boom bay that it looks like you may be able to take a boat to winneconne in a day or so.

There are ice chunks coming down so extreme caution should be exhibited, but the river from gills to the mouth and beyond is wide open.

Good luck this weekend.

Your welcome.

I will have a weekly fishing report that will be updated by wednesday all summer long on www.fortfremont.com and then click on the pure fishing page. We will have written as well as video reports as we can get video. We will be using our pro-staffers for reports on Muskies as well as Walleye through out wisconsin. Perch on winnebago and bluegills on the beds. Keep that in mind and on your favorites list.

Also, If you guys like this, go to www.travelfremont.com . It is the Fremont area chamber of commerce website. You can go and like them on there face book page as well. There will be some fun things coming through Fremont this summer. Fireworks are the biggest in the area and will be held on July 1st.
