I bought a Humminbird 998c last year after having some bad luck with Lowrance. Installation went well and it was pretty easy to learn. There's so many different features that I haven't used yet, due to the fact that I got it later in the season. Really looking forward to getting better aquainted with it. It comes with an instructional CD that's good at explaining everything. I bought mine at The Reel Shot and those guys were real helpful. Something I really like is the GPS which features a long arrow to help keep you on course. also the ease of operation. The sidescan stuff is cool to. It's a little pricey but I think the value is there for me.

I suggest if you can, get out and try both units that interest you. Run through the menus, use it a little if you can and see what you like.

I personally think Lowrance is the better option for many reasons, but this is one of those deals you'll never get a 100 people to agree on the same thing. Demo the units and buy what YOU like, that's my suggestion.

If you go to the Reel Shot they have both units on display if you call ahead and set up an appointment with Troy he will be more than happy to show you the differences on both the units. I contemplated the same thought last year and kept my Lowrance units but after seeing the new 360 degree scan on the new Birds if I were to do it over I would of switched.
